Research Interests

  • Media policy and industry, Political economy of communication, Culture industry, Korean and East Asian cinema
Shin Dong Kim is Visiting Professor to the CityU's Media and Communication for 2020/21B semester. He is a professor at the Media School, Hallym University, Korea. He founded the Institute for Communication Arts and Technology (iCat) and served as the Vice President for International Affairs for the university. He has been an active advocate and innovator for the globalization of higher education throughout his professional career. His area of research and teaching covers culture and creative industries, media policy and political economy, global communications, and film studies. He is currently leading a five-year national research project on modeling the Korean ICT developments. He is preparing a book on the political economy of the Korean media industries and culture, and writing on colonial experiences represented on the Korean cinema. Dr. Kim has also been teaching at many universities globally including Dartmouth College, Sciences Po Paris, Peking University, City University of Hong Kong, University of the Philippines, Shanghai University, etc. He provides consultation to both government and industry. Served also as a Senior Advisor to the Ministry of Youth and Information of the Republic of Rwanda in 2013. Dr. Kim earned his PhD from Indiana University in Mass Communications.
