Muhammad Masood’s (PhD City University of Hong Kong) research interests focus on the relationship between digital media and social change, mainly examining the civic and political implications of digital media technologies, including public opinion, political communication (e.g., misinformation), civic engagement, and intergroup relations (e.g., minorities).

Dr. Masood’s scholarly journey began with foundational work on the intersection of communication, media technology, and society, which later evolved naturally into research on misinformation and public engagement and, more recently, AI—a logical progression at this intersection. His latest focus is on how generative AI and synthetic media, particularly deepfakes and the AI-mediated information environment, are reshaping civic life across diverse sociopolitical contexts. Methodologically, he employs survey and experimental designs, cross-national comparative analysis, advanced statistical techniques, and qualitative methods.

To date, he has published about 23 articles in SSCI/JCR journals (8 as first author and 10 as second author), including New Media & Society, Social Media + Society, Journalism & Mass Communication Quarterly, International Journal of Public Opinion Research, Journal of Broadcasting & Electronic Media, and Asian Journal of Communication.
