CityU was proud to dispatch faculty members and research students to present their academic projects at the 13th Honours Symposium for Asian Graduate Students in Communication Research, held on 26–27 April 2025 in Singapore.

Hosted by the Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information at Nanyang Technological University, the symposium brought together emerging scholars from five partner universities to explore pressing questions in communication, such as how digital experiences are shaping our well-being and how AI is influencing media and engagement today.

The CityU delegation included two distinguished professors, Associate Professor Marko Skoric and Associate Professor Ye Sun, along with four talented PhD students—Wei Huang, Keyu Zhang, Haodong Liu, and Wenjia Yan—who shared research on topics including digital journalism, algorithmic gatekeeping, the effects of media attention, and privacy empowerment and protection.

During the symposium, both Prof. Skoric and Prof. Sun provided insightful comments on peer papers, significantly enriching the academic discourse. Meanwhile, the students actively engaged in lively discussions with their peers and experts, exchanging insights and exploring innovative methodological approaches that are shaping communication studies across Asia and beyond.

Keyu Zhang, CityU's first-year PhD student, expressed, "I'm extremely glad to have had the opportunity to participate in the PhD symposium. The professors reviewed my manuscript very carefully and offered practical suggestions. This experience is very valuable at this stage of my doctoral journey, helping me refine my research and improve my academic results."

Wei Huang, a PhD candidate from CityU, added, "The symposium was not only a platform for scholarly exchange but also provided invaluable networking opportunities for emerging academics and young researchers across the region. It fostered meaningful connections with peers and senior scholars from different countries, opening avenues for future collaborations and mentorship. Such interactions are vital for our academic growth and the advancement of the field."

The event concluded with a cultural immersion activity, allowing attendees to explore Singapore’s vibrant heritage and further deepen cross-border ties.

This symposium exemplifies an enduring collaboration among five prestigious Asian universities—Nanyang Technological University Singapore, City University of Hong Kong, Korea University, National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University, and Yonsei University—that promotes cross-national academic exchange, research collaboration, and the development of innovative communication scholarship.

This longstanding partnership reflects a shared commitment to nurturing future scholars and fostering an inclusive, dynamic academic community across Asia.
