COM Research Seminar: (Not) Hearing the Other Side: The Implications of Political Disagreement and Avoidance for Contemporary Democratic Citizenship

20 Dec 2021 (Mon)

On December 16th, we invited Dr. German Neubaum from the University of Duisburg-Essen and Dr. Jakob Ohme from the Weizenbaum Institute to our research seminar. From COM, Dr. Marko Skoric and Dr. Tetsuro Kobayashi participated in the seminar. The seminar focused on how political disagreement is avoided and what communication environments are chosen when it is expressed, in light of recent political polarization and changes in the media environment. The speakers also discussed the role of increasingly algorithmically curated news in accessing a variety of political information. The seminar was attended by an audience of over 50 people from all over the world, mainly from Hong Kong and Germany.
