The 20th anniversary of the founding of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region is an opportune moment to reflect on the progress of the implementation of the “One Country, Two Systems” principle. On 15 July 2017, the Department of Public Policy and SynergyNet (a local think tank) co-organised a full-day symposium at CityU to discuss this issue.

Eight speakers from diverse backgrounds were invited to the symposium, including Professor CHEN Lijun, Professor of the Centre for Studies of Hong Kong, Macau and Pearl River Delta at Sun Yat-sen University in Guangzhou; Professor LUI Tai-lok, Chair Professor of Hong Kong Studies at The Education University of Hong Kong; Professor HO Ming-sho, Professor of the Department of Sociology at National Taiwan University, Mrs IP LAU Suk-yee Regina, Chairperson of the New People’s Party; Professor PEI Minxin, Professor of Government at Claremont McKenna College; Mr HO Chun-yan Albert, former Chairman of the Democratic Party; Professor HSU Szuechin of the Department of Political Science at National Taiwan University; and Professor WONG Yue-chim, the Philip Wong Kennedy Wong Professor in Political Economy at the University of Hong Kong. The speakers presented their views on the successes and failures of the implementation of the One Country, Two Systems principle and shared their insights into the challenges ahead.

The symposium showcased quality and rigorous debate from a range of perspectives, and was attended by more than 100 participants from various sectors of society.
