CLASS Academic Receives the University-wide Teaching Excellence Awards 2022/23

The College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences is pleased to announce that Dr TSUI Lik-hang, Assistant Professor of the Department of Chinese and History (CAH), was conferred the Teaching Excellence Awards (TEA) 2022/23 by City University of Hong Kong (CityU).

Dr Tsui is a scholar of premodern Chinese history and digital humanities who is deft at leveraging digital tools for teaching and learning. For instance, he has designed online collaborative annotation activities for his students to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of learning. As one of the three recipients of TEA, he is driven by his teaching motto: “A Digital Deep Dive into Where the Past and Present Meet”. Such a realisation is manifested in his practice of digital humanities pedagogy, which strengthens the element of “discovery” and a student-centred approach to teaching Chinese history.

More than a decade ago, Dr Tsui kickstarted his teaching career at the University of Oxford, delivering small-group tutorials during his doctoral years. Internationally recognised and accredited, he is an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society in the UK.

Joining CityU in 2019, Dr Tsui teaches both undergraduate and postgraduate courses in history at CAH, bringing his trilingual skills to the table. Committed to departmental development, he coordinates CAH’s MPhil and PhD programmes and serves as the e-Learning Coordinator. In 2021, he completed a teaching development project, “Rediscovering Chinese History through Data: Incorporating Digital Humanities Pedagogy into Data-Driven Learning of Chinese History”, with a view to exploring the interdisciplinary field of digital humanities.

The TEA, administered centrally by CityU’s Office of the Provost, acknowledges and rewards outstanding academics while promoting and nurturing excellent teaching practices in the University. The award will be formally presented to Dr Tsui and other recipients at the Commencement Day in May 2023.
