New Issue of CITY CLASS Released

The latest issue of CITY CLASS, the magazine of CityU’s College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, is released.

Populations around the world are ageing at a faster pace than in the past and this demographic transition will have an impact on almost all aspects of society. The World Health Organisation declared 2021-2030 as the “Decade of Healthy Ageing”, emphasising the need to create a supportive environment to maintain older adults’ functional ability and remain a resource to communities.

In this issue of CITY CLASS, Dr Dannii YEUNG of the Department of Social and Behavioural Sciences, whose research focuses include ageing and retirement transition, will analyse the mental health and psycho-motivation of older adults. Dr Tracy LU Shiyu of the same department will share with readers the concept of time banking to value the elderly more by facilitating them to make contribution to the society. Dr CHAN Ho-mun of the Department of Public and International Affairs will provide his expert opinions on how an age-friendly smart city can be built by connecting senior citizens in a data-enabled system.

Living in an era of technology, technology helps make our lives easier and streamline the workflows. But human skills such as creativity and communication are still essential attributes for our future leaders. Dr John MAEDA, a world-renowned technologist and designer, received an honorary doctorate at CityU in late 2022. He had a valuable dialogue with CLASS faculty members, sharing his wisdom on resilience and multidisciplinary education, and imparting advice to young people in this digital era.

Dr Bert GEORGE, new faculty member of the Department of Public and International Affairs, also wants to inspire his students to have a broader view and take a holistic approach in the study of public administration. Another new faculty of CLASS, Dr LI Jixing, Assistant Professor of Department of Linguistics and Translation, is keen to explore in a new research field of linguistics and cognitive neuroscience.

CityU’s teaching force always performs its mission of nurturing talents and inspiring students. Christy CHAN, Senior Tutor of Chan Feng Men-ling Chan Shuk-lin Language Centre, has just received UGC Collaborative Team Award with her English Across the Curriculum team, marking a milestone in her 25 years of teaching journey. CityU’s innovative spirit and quality teaching have also paved way for a career in education for CLASS alumnus Frederick POON Siu-chi, who is now the principal of St Paul’s Co-educational College. Abundant international learning opportunities are offered to CLASS students every year, 39 students returned from their rewarding overseas summer trip and share with readers their unique learning experiences. CLASS Advanced Methods School (CAMS) was established last summer, bringing local students, scholars and overseas researchers together to usher into a new era of research in liberal arts, humanities and social sciences.
