Publication by Criminologist at CLASS Awarded Outstanding Academic Title

A scholarly publication, of which Associate Professor of Criminology at CityU’s Department of Social and Behavioural Sciences Dr Oliver CHAN Heng-choon is a co-author, has been designated Outstanding Academic Title for 2020 by Choice.

The book, titled Psycho-Criminological Approaches to Stalking Behavior: The International Perspective, is a thorough, up-to-date overview of stalking perpetration and victimisation in different regions of the world. This authoritative book brings together contributions from a team of leading scholars and practitioners that discuss a diverse range of interrelated topics and issues relevant to stalking and intrusive behaviour from both theoretical and practical contexts. Whereas most of the literature on the subject is written from a Western viewpoint, this unique volume examines empirical research, policies, and practices from Asian and African countries, as well as those from Europe, the Americas, and Australia, to provide a truly global perspective.

Established in 1964, Choice is a publishing unit of the Association of College and Research Libraries, a division of the American Library Association. It publishes thousands of reviews in 50 subdisciplines spanning humanities, science and technology, and social and behavioural sciences per year. Every January, it selects a list of Outstanding Academic Titles among the titles revied during the previous calendar year.

With only around 10% of the reviewed titles selected, the list reflects each title’s overall excellence in presentation and scholarship, importance relative to other literature in the field, distinction as a first treatment of a given subject in book or electronic form, originality or uniqueness of treatment, value to undergraduate students, and importance in building undergraduate library collections. This year, Dr Chan joins the authors of another 530 books and digital resources to receive the honour.
