The 8th Advanced Programme for Chinese Senior Judges Closes: Memories to Cherish

The Closing Ceremony for 8th Advanced Programme for Chinese Senior Judges was held on 21 January 2014 at City University of Hong Kong. The officiating guests included Dr. LIU Xinkui, Director-General of the Legal Affairs Department, Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the HKSAR; Mr. SHIEH Paul SC, Chairman of Hong Kong Bar Association; Mr. LAM Ambrose S K, President of The Law Society of Hong Kong; Mr. DU Guoxing, Vice Chairman and General Manager of China Legal Service (H.K.) Ltd; Prof. LIN Feng, Acting Dean, School of Law, City University of Hong Kong; and Prof. WANG Guiguo, Director of Centre for Judicial Education and Research and Chair Professor of Chinese and Comparative Law, School of Law, City University of Hong Kong.

Prof. Lin Feng delivered the welcoming speech. He was proud that CityU possess resources and experience in related fields to help Chinese judges have a better understanding of Hong Kong’s judicial system through the platform of the Advanced Programme.

Mr. Paul Shieh explained the importance of transparency under the law. He also mentioned that the court has to uphold justice and is responsible for maintaining fairness to all Hong Kong citizens. He also hoped that the programme has brought to the Chinese judges a precious memory.

Mr. Ambrose Lam thought that the training was good to the judges as he believed that the court in China is facing greater challenges than ever before, as the public’s expectation towards the judges is rising. Also, fair and effective law of a country plays an important role in national investment.

Mr. DONG Jianzhong, Vice-President of Beijing Second Intermediate People’s Court and representative of the 8th Advanced Programme for Senior Judges, said that although the training was only for fifteen days, it has brought the judges a very enriching experience. The good times here will become beautiful memories in their heart.

Prof. Wang Guiguo expressed gratitude to all the Chinese Senior Judges from different provinces, the CityU Law School as well as teachers who delivered seminars in the programme. He believed that the rule of law is very important for any great country, and the quality of the law depends on the quality of the judge. He encouraged the Chinese judges to continue their communication and exchanges with Hong Kong counterparts.
