CityU Tiger Featured Talk: Navigating the World of Statistics: Unveiling Truth and Fostering Critical Thinking

In today’s data-driven world, statistics plays a crucial role in shaping our understanding of various phenomena. However, there exists a prevalent divide in public perception when it comes to the reliability and interpretation of statistical information. There are two contrasting views commonly held by the general public. One perspective assumes that statistics possesses inherent infallibility and is capable of proving any claim, while the other suggests that statistics can be manipulated to prove or disprove anything, rendering it meaningless. It is important to acknowledge that neither of these extreme views accurately represents the nature of statistics. This talk discusses the misconceptions of statistics, emphasising the importance of contextual understanding and critical evaluation of statistical findings. The scepticism surrounding statistics often arises from the misuse and misrepresentation of statistical significance, where data is presented without proper context or interpretation. We will delve into the historical development of statistics, tracing its evolution from ancient times. While significant progress has been made, enabling statistics to have a profound impact on human lives, this progress has also given rise to a healthy scepticism. It prompts us to approach statistical claims with a discerning eye, understanding the limitations and potential biases that may be present.

The Talent and Education Development Office (TED) is honoured to invite Professor Alan Wan, Head of the Department of Management Sciences, to guide us in discovering the truth behind the statistics and historical development of this field. He will also share his personal anecdotes and reflections on how his own academic journey has shaped his perspective on life. Don’t miss this opportunity to broaden your horizons, challenge your preconceptions and enhance your statistical literacy with the wisdom of Professor Wan!

Time: 16:00 - 17:00
Venue: LT-3, C Y Sun Lecture Theatre (4/F, Yellow Zone, YEUNG)

Biography of Professor Alan Wan
