25 Years

since University Inauguration

CityU has achieved tremendous success in professional education and discovery-driven research despite our relative youth. In the 25 years since our inauguration as a university, we have risen to become one of the world’s top universities, known for innovation, creativity and research aimed at making a difference in people’s lives. We are very proud that we are currently ranked 52nd in the world and the 5th best university under 50 years of age, according to QS (Quacquarelli Symonds). Our success is due to the incredible work of all our students and faculty, staff and stakeholders, alumni and graduates, donors and friends. Together we have built a university of excellence and we are excited to move forwards and continue our trajectory of success.

Mr Lester Garson HUANG, SBS, JP

Chairman of the Council

CityU has cemented its place in the hearts and minds of the people of Hong Kong through its commitment to excellence and its dedication to society. The support that CityU has built up over the last 25 years is a testament to the role the University plays today. Our contributions have grown in scale and significance. Our links with technology and industry in China, the region and beyond have strengthened. Our alumni networks have expanded, and donations grown. Pleasingly, our identity as a world-class university has grown in prominence.

We will continue to strive for higher standard of achievement in higher education. We hope to continue to enjoy support from influential decision makers in government, business, technology, industry and society.

Professor Way KUO

Our 25th anniversary since our inauguration as a university is an excellent opportunity to recall memories from past years, reflect on where CityU stands today, and identify our dreams and aspirations for the next 25 years. We have evolved steadily over the past quarter of a century, establishing many firsts for Hong Kong (in veterinary medicine, data science, creative media and energy and the environment); expanding our research agenda to provide cutting edge technologies and create exciting new knowledge that directly benefit society; broadening our portfolio of study programmes in response to the demands of the global job market; and attracting ever more talented local and non-local students. By merging teaching and research, focusing on interdisciplinarity and championing the role “soulware” plays in higher education, we have created a university that makes Hong Kong proud.
