On 22 Nov 2022, Department of Chemistry (CHEM) organised a Memordum of Understanding (MOU) Signing Ceremony with Gemological Institute of America (GIA) Hong Kong limited. We were delighted to invite the Director, Ms Stella Lee and Supervisor of Education Instructions, Ms. Carmen Leung of GIA Hong Kong Limited to join this celebratory event.

This year CHEM is grateful to partner with GIA and introduce a new elective course, namely Gemological Science (CHEM3085) to our CHEM students. At present, no local university provides proper and systematic training for graduates working in the gemology industry. GIA is the world’s leading provider of gemological research, education, identification and grading services and the creator of the universally accepted standard for grading diamonds. GIA is keen to provide practical support to this course. For the benefit to our students, they will arrange their experts to conduct lectures and laboratory practical training sessions on the inspection of diamond. At the end, our students will receive a digital Diamond Essentials Certificate upon satisfactory completion of the course.

It is our mutual benefit that this course will specifically provide solid foundation, in-depth knowledge and professional training in the area of gemology so that students can apply the knowledge in gemology related professions such as becoming a gemologist and working in the gemology industry.

Once again, Department of Chemistry is excited about this pioneering partnership with GIA and thank GIA for the tremendous contribution to this educational undergraduate course.
