Department of Materials Science and Engineering

The Department has state-of-the-art fabrication and characterization facilities for wide range of research areas related to materials science and engineering. The faculty members of the Department carry out both fundamental and applied research under the framework of:

Minimum Entrance Requirements

1. Master of Philosophy (MPhil)

  • hold a relevant Bachelor's Degree with first or second class honours (or equivalent qualification) from a recognized university.

2. Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

  • hold a higher research degree (or equivalent qualification) from a recognized university; or
  • hold a Master's Degree (or equivalent qualification) from a recognized university; or
  • hold a Bachelor's Degree with first class honours (or equivalent qualification) from a recognized university; or
  • be a current MPhil student in the University who is seeking transfer to a PhD programme.

English Proficiency Requirements

Applicants from an institution where the language of teaching is not English should satisfy one of the following minimum English proficiency requirements:

  • TOEFL: a minimum score of 550 (paper-based) / 79 (internet-based) / 59 (revised paper-delivered test; sum of Reading, Listening and Writing section scores); or
  • IELTS: an overall band score of 6.5; or
  • CET-6: a minimum score of 490 may be accepted; or
  • Other equivalent English proficiency qualifications.
