Throughout history, Chinese artists have depicted the imaginary beasts that appear in the order of heaven and earth from ancient myths and in a world that was created by the Buddha. These artists helped their society understand the moral teachings and core values of Buddhism in a figurative form. Similarly, Chinese sculpture originated in the desire to depict the spiritual world in a solemn and majestic manner. The artists initially translated the myths into two-dimensional paintings, and then into three-dimensional life-size beasts. In this way, emerging technologies helped represent ancient texts.
