Yang Ta-chang, dates unknown, served in Qianlong’s (1736-1795) court. The Qianlong Emperor, in his poetry and “Imperial Record on the E-mo Birds”, wrote that the E-mo bird was not native to the West. After the emperor acquired one from a foreign ship in 1774, he re-examined and refuted his previous account as wrong. In that year, the emperor requested painters to add the E-mo bird to the Manual of Birds (1.5), also on display here. The bird is perhaps a kind of cassowary (casuaris) bird indigenous to Australia or the New Guinea area.
