Dear Alumni,

We are excited to share that the University Farm operated by CityU in Lam Tsuen, Tai Po, is now in full operation following the safe arrival of the cattle imported from Australia. Council Chairman, Mr Lester Garson Huang, and I were on hand to witness the cattle reach the University Farm.

CityU is the first university in Hong Kong to introduce and practice the pioneering concept of One Health and, among all the universities in Asia, pays special attention to animal welfare. Over the years, we have established the Jockey Club College of Veterinary Medicine and Life Sciences and the Centre for Animal Health and Welfare with a team of world-class teachers and researchers. The University Farm will further offer staff and students top-notch facilities for training and learning in veterinary medicine, marking another milestone in the University’s development. In a first for local universities, fresh milk and ice cream are expected to be sold on campus from next January. So stay tuned!

The University Mascot warmly greeted new students on the first school day to kick off the new academic year. This was the Mascot’s first live appearance since its debut on University Day in March.

The academic and athletic potential of seven more student-athletes will be comprehensively supported through the Student Athletes Admission Scheme this year. I hope these student-athletes and all our freshmen will embrace the CityU spirit and stay wise, vital and vigorous like a tiger throughout their study journey.

The third series of “Beyond Boundaries: Dialogue with Presidents of World’s Leading Educational Institutions” was broadcast recently. In these videos, I continue to discuss global education development with the presidents and principals of top universities and high schools in Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, Israel, the US, and others. You can watch these dialogues on our video channel and YouTube.

Our innovative breakthroughs are once again recognised globally. CityU was placed 29th in the world in the 2021 Top 100 universities granted US utility patents by the National Academy of Inventors. This is our highest-ever position, following a leap of 22 places from last year, and ranks us 1st among local institutions for the 6th consecutive year.

CityU members are continually commended for their dedication to the University and the wider society. More than 20 were named on the 2022 HKSAR Honours List for their contributions in their respective fields.

CityU will confer honorary doctoral degrees on Professor Evelyn L. Hu and Dr John Maeda for their significant work on behalf of education and the well-being of society, and we have granted the title of Honorary Fellow to four distinguished persons—Mrs Indra Banga and three alumni, Dr Sunny Chai Ngai-chiu, BBS, JP, Dr Gary Cheng Faat-ting, and Dr Brian Li Yiu-cheung—in acknowledgement of their substantial service to the University and the community. Congratulations to all CityU members for gaining such well-deserved recognition!

Meanwhile, whisking visitors back to the nomadic age some 1,000 years ago, the highly interactive exhibition “Hunters, Warriors, Spirits: Nomadic Art of North China” at the Indra and Harry Banga Gallery features over 250 exquisite artworks. Please visit before the exhibition ends on 23 October.

I wish you good health and every success.
