30 June 2022

Dear Alumni,

The pandemic has not stopped us from reaching out. Recently we launched the second series of “Beyond Boundaries: Dialogue with Presidents of World’s Leading Educational Institutions”. In these videos, I discuss contemporary education issues and explore the future direction of education development from a global perspective with presidents of renowned universities, and the head of a secondary school. These dialogues are now available on our video channel and our YouTube channel.

Earlier we celebrated a significant milestone for the Class of 2022: the Commencement Ceremony. As mentioned in my address, “A journey of 1,000 miles begins with a single step.” Learning is a lifelong pursuit and the CityU family provides ample growth opportunities for our alumni. Do stay connected through initiatives such as the annual University Day, and by participating in our flagship entrepreneurship programme, HK Tech 300.

To further drive innovation and technological development in Hong Kong and mainland China, the first nationwide HK Tech 300 Start-up Competition was launched on 20 June. All CityU students, alumni and researchers, as well as members of the public wishing to leverage the University’s intellectual property and technology to launch start-ups, are welcome to join.

Bonds between alumni continue to strengthen. At an event co-organised by the CityU Shenzhen Alumni Chapter, CityU Eminence Society and Alumni Relations Office on 18 June, I and other University representatives shared the latest CityU updates with some 300 alumni. I very much appreciate their unwavering support.

CityU’s continued success is inextricably linked to our world-class faculty and their first-rate research output. Indeed, CityU won a total of 22 awards at Inventions Geneva Evaluation Days 2022, the highest number among local institutions for two years in a row. Moreover, Professor Xie Min was elected to the European Academy of Sciences and Arts in the Technical and Environmental Sciences Class; Professor Michael Tse Chi-kong was awarded the IEEE CASS Charles A. Desoer Technical Achievement Award 2022 – the first academic in China to receive this award; and Professor Luk Kwai-man was conferred the 14th Guanghua Engineering Science and Technology Award, the highest honour in China’s engineering field.

In May, CityU co-organised a three-day online multidisciplinary forum with Nature Conferences, a preeminent series curated by the highly prestigious science journal Nature and related journals. This forum served as a pre-launch activity for the HK Tech Forum, a platform taking place through December, for discussing new strategies to address major challenges in science with world-leading experts.

We are thankful for the support of the CityU community in helping the University venture beyond boundaries.

Best wishes to you for a healthy and safe summer!
