President’s welcome

Welcome everyone to our first-ever University Day!

Since its establishment as a university in 1994, we have developed into one of the world’s top universities with the support and concerted efforts of our faculty, staff, students, alumni, stakeholders, and friends. We are excited to move forward and continue our remarkable trajectory of success over the next few decades. University Day (U-Day) is going to be an annual event held on the third Friday of March for sharing news about our latest developments and achievements and celebrating our future with the general public and the greater CityU family.

We are committed to leadership in professional education and problem-based research, and we are committed to excellence in all that we do. U-Day aims to let you know more about our very special brand, such as how we:

  • integrate teaching and research
  • separate politics from education
  • cultivate “soulware” beyond software and hardware
  • venture beyond boundaries in our pursuit of excellence
  • champion innovation, creativity, and original thinking
  • encourage leadership and entrepreneurship in society

U-Day also presents a great opportunity to celebrate our latest news, for example:

  • new initiatives like HK Tech 300, HK Tech Tiger and graduation commencement, including honours for graduates
  • landmark achievements in veterinary medicine and life sciences
  • new buildings like the Jockey Club One Health Tower, HK Tech International Centre, HK Tech Lodge, our dairy farm, and the new student hostels at Whitehead and Student Hostel Phase 6 at Tat Hong Avenue
  • research breakthroughs
  • cutting-edge materials research at the CityU Shenzhen Futian Research Institute
  • exciting events organised by the Hong Kong Institute for Advanced Study
  • recruitment of diversified global talents
  • success in sports and the arts

Even more special for U-Day 2022, we will launch our new Tiger mascot and a fresh version of the University Anthem.

So thank you once again for joining us. I wish that we could have met in person for our very first U-Day, but I hope very much that U-Day 2023 will be held in person. Let’s pray Hong Kong can overcome present challenges and soon get back to normal!

Thank you.
