WebImage Icon Library

This WebImage icon library is compiled by the Computing Services Centre of City University of Hong Kong from different icon sources. The filenames and directory names are designed so that the library is portable between UNIX and DOS system (and other systems as well). Please report any errors or suggestions to cc@plink.cityu.edu.hk .

How to Use the WebImage icon library

In order to save the effort for web page writers in producing fancy web pages, the Computing Services Centre develops this icon library. You may use any images in the icon library just by creating an image link to our WEB server and the appropriate image file.

To view the images in our library, you should connect to our WebImage icon library Index page at http://www.cityu.edu.hk/webimage/index.htm. If you are using a graphical web browser, such as Netscape, you will be able to view an index page with some inline images accompany with full path for the image file. You can select your favorite image. To include that image in your own HTML document, you can add an image link with full URL to the HTML document. The URL for our server is 'http://www.cityu.edu.hk/'.

For example, if you want to include the CityU logo image with the path "/webimage/cityu/ulogo.gif" in your own document, you may add the following image URL into a suitable position of your document: <img src="http://www.cityu.edu.hk/webimage/cityu/ulogo.gif">

Unless you need to modify the icons to suit your own need, please use image links to reference the images rather than get your own copy from the WebImage icon library. This save both your time and the transfer time for web users.

How to Get a copy of WebImage icon library

We have prepared a tar and gzip compressed copy of whole WebImage icon library ( latest version ). If you want to have your own copy of CityU WebImage icon library, you can download it from our server. You can also get a free copy of gzip and tar program for DOS to decompress the file.

• Download CityU WebImage icon library: webimage.tgz
• Download gzip.exe for DOS
• Download tar.exe for DOS
• Download tar.man, an English manual for tar program

How to expand the library to DOS system

• Have your tools (gzip.exe tar.exe tar.man) and archive (webimage.tgz) in C:\.
• Change your directory to C:\.
• Expand the compressed tar file:
  gzip -d webimage.tgz
• Restore the library files and directories:
  tar xvf webimage.tar
• The library files will be expanded in the C:\WEBIMAGE directory.

Special Notes:

• This WebImage icon library is free to use, you do not need to get the permission before using it.
• We promise that the image files in our library will NOT be deleted/renamed nor be moved to other locations. You can safely refer to our library with the current path.
