France - Hong Kong
Distinguished Lecture Series
The France-Hong Kong Distinguished Lectures are a series of high-profile lectures organised by CityU under the auspices of the French Academy of Sciences, the Consulate General of France in Hong Kong and Macau, and The Légion d’Honneur Club Hong Kong Chapter.
The Series aims to promote the French Academy of Sciences and more generally the French scientific community among the scientific community in Hong Kong. The first lecture was held in 2005, and at least one lecture is held each year. Each lecture focuses on a topic of contemporary interest that impacts society and is of interest to the general public. All the lectures are held at City University of Hong Kong.
The France–Hong Kong Distinguished Lecture Series has built up strong ties between City University of Hong Kong (CityU) and France over the last 10 years, showcasing CityU’s commitment to strengthening international partnerships in higher education.
CityU is in an excellent position – geographically, intellectually, and culturally – to capitalise on its East-West position, supported by its strong commitment to innovation and internationalisation. These lectures help further improve our international network and collaboration with global talent, which in turn helps to promote the cross-fertilisation of ideas and the creation of new knowledge that can contribute to solving critical global issues.
Over the past 10 years, the Series has introduced many notable French scientists, including Fields Medalists and Nobel Laureates, to the CityU campus, providing the perfect platform for intellectual exploration, creative thinking and problem solving. It is these connections that have made this Series such a vital part of CityU’s history.
I would like to take this opportunity to express my sincere appreciation to Professor Philippe G. Ciarlet, who is a Senior Fellow at our Institute for Advanced Study and the Founding Father as well as spiritual guide of the Series. He started the initiative from scratch and has led it to the important position that it holds today. Professor Ciarlet’s support has ensured that the Series continues to grow in importance.
