Professor Xu Kuangdi was born in 1937 Chongde County, Zhejiang Province. An internationally renowned engineer in metallurgy,
he was elected to the Chinese Academy of Engineering in 1995.
Professor Xu was former Mayor of Shanghai, former Vice-Chairman of the 10th National Committee of Chinese Peopleˇ¦s Political Consultative Conference, the third and the fourth President of the Chinese Academy of Engineering
plus the Communist Party Secretary thereof. He is currently the Deputy Director of the State Council Academic Degrees Committee, Honorary Chairman of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Honorary Chairman of China Federation of Industrial Economics, President of The China-US Peopleˇ¦s Friendship Association, Honorary Chairman of the China Association for International Friendly Contact, an alternate member of the 14th Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and member of the 15th and 16th CPC Central Committees.
Professor Xu graduated from the Beijing Institute of Iron and Steel Engineering (the
precursor of University of Science & Technology Beijing) in 1959. He taught at
numerous institutions of higher education, and was among the first batch of young
scientists commended by China's State Council for outstanding contributions.
Professor Xu won the Prize for Scientific and Technological Progress of Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation in China in 2007.
He received Grand Cross Medal of the Polar Star from Sweden; the German-Chinese Friendship Award and the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit
from the Federal Republic of Germany in 2006. He also received the International Medal of the Royal Academy of Engineering, UK; the British Chamber of Commerce China Link Achievements Award and the International Medal of the Sweden Chamber of Commerce in 2008. In 2010, Professor Xu received the China-Europe Friendship Award at the Hamburg Summit.
