Biography
Professor Horace H. S. Ip
PhD (UK)
Prof. Horace H. S. Ip is the Chair Professor of Computer Science and the founding director of the Image Computing Group and AIMtech Centre (Centre for Innovative Applications of Internet and Multimedia Technologies) at City University of Hong Kong. His research interests include image analysis, interactive multimedia, pattern recognition, virtual environment and e-Learning technologies. His applied research and innovations in these areas have won him numerous regional and international awards from the Information Technology as well as the Media Arts communities. These include a Gold Medal from the Salon International Des Inventions, Geneva, Prix Ars Electronica, Ars Electronica, Austria, the Hong Kong Computer Society IT Excellence Awards, the Hong Kong SAR Hong Kong Awards for Industry, Asia-Pacific Information and Communications Technology Award. In 2007, Professor Ip has been recognized as one of world’s distinguished innovators by the TIME magazine and has pioneered innovative applications of interactive media technology in visual art, psychotherapy of children, Chinese calligraphy, and e-learning. He has published over 200 papers in international journals and conference proceedings and his work have been shown at premium venues of digital media and technology such as SIGGRAPH, Ars Electronica, International Symposium of Electronic Arts (ISEA), ACM Multimedia, Hong Kong Biennial Art Exhibition and Hong Kong Innovation Expo and has been extensively reported in regional and international broadcasting agencies, including CNN, BBC, CNA, RTHK.
Prof. Ip has served on the Editorial Boards of major journals in multimedia and computer graphics such as the IEEE Transactions on Multimedia, Pattern Recognition, The Visual Computer, the International Journal of Multimedia Tools and Applications, the Chinese Journal of CAD and Computer Graphics (The Chinese Academy of Science) and is an Area Editor for the Pattern Recognition Letters journal. Prof Ip also serves on the International Association for Pattern Recognition (IAPR) Governing Board and co-founded of its Technical Committee (TC12) on Multimedia Systems. He is currently the Vice-Chairman of the China Computer Federation, Technical Committee on CAD & Computer Graphics and the Founding President of the Hong Kong Society for Multimedia and Image Computing. Prof Ip has been awarded in 2004 the prestigious Fellow of International Association for Pattern Recognition (IAPR) for contributions to the field of Pattern Recognition.
Locally, Prof. Ip is actively involved in the promotion of interactive multimedia in teaching and learning as well as the engineering practices and professional certification for Information Technology professionals. He chairs the Dissemination and Promotion Subcommittee of the HKSAR Quality Education Fund (QEF) and the Information Discipline (INF) of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE). Prof. Ip is a Fellow of the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE), a Fellow of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), United Kingdom, and a senior member of IEEE.
