Course Aims

 In today’s society, surfing and doing transactions on the Web permeate most business and individual undertakings. An enormous amount of human interactions and data exchange are done directly over the Internet. New concerns on the security and privacy of individuals, companies or organizations are introduced. These concerns are making profound impacts on our society and also changing how we interpret the meaning of security and privacy in general. In this course, we aim to introduce a wide spectrum of risks, vulnerabilities, and potential damages that a student may encounter by using computers and the Internet and enhance students’ understanding on how these concerns are affecting the security and privacy of themselves as well as the society as a whole. The students will also learn how to apply computer technologies for protecting their privacy and information. The legal, ethical and societal aspects of information security and privacy will also be discussed.  Key topics include social networking privacy, security and privacy of mobile communications, secure e-banking and e-shopping, ethical and legal issues related to security and privacy on the Internet; computer crime: identity theft, spam, phishing, malicious software (e.g. virus, worm, trapdoor, trojan horse); copyright laws and ethical use of data. Learning activities include lectures, tutorials, group projects, case studies, and hands-on lab sessions.

Examination: 40%
Examination Duration: 2 hours
^ For a student to pass the course, at least 30% of the maximum mark for the examination must be obtained.
