Course Aims

  1. Realize that classical poetry can be applied to real-life issues such as naming, writing lyrics, advertisements, catch phrases and slogans. The fact that poetry is so closely related to modern life will inspire their interest in literary composition.
  2. Develop an interest in further exploring classical rhyme and tone patterns in couplets, pianwen and fu poetry but also modern poetry. Probing deeper into theoretical studies will help them enhance their writing ability and nurture their sense of understanding and appreciation.
  3. Improve their critical thinking skills and the ability to solve problems. Poetry composition and the writing of song lyrics, advertisements, and congratulatory texts, require a certain depth of ideas, style of layout and structure. Hence literary composition is beyond doubt the most important exercise for creativity, with the result that the students will be able to solve real-life problems in a more creative manner.
  4. Nurture their sense of appreciation of poems on different themes and study them from different angles and across different disciplines, including the humanities, social science and natural science.
