Course Aims

The design project is a group project with 3 to 5 students who work towards the design of a mechatronic-type product under the supervision of academic staff. The project involves a substantial design task requiring the application of knowledge related, predominantly, to mechanical, electronic and software engineering subject areas. Typically, the students shall initially perform reverse engineering, brainstorming, and conceptual design to come up with a set of feasible alternatives. They select the ‘best’ alternative, divide the product into sub-systems, and identify the requirements of each sub-system. They proceed to perform detailed design and analysis, selection of components for their sub-systems, and the development of a working prototype. The project work also includes functional tests to evaluate the product performance, preparation of project report and oral presentation.
