Course Aims

This course aims to challenge students to grasp the complexity behind phenomena of recent cultural flows in Asia. Cultural phenomena reflected in the mass media will be introduced as examples. In addition, the impact of mass media and popular cultures within East Asian countries will also be addressed and discussed. Through a multi-disciplinary approach (Historical, Political, Economical, Societal and Technological) as well as contemporary perspectives (e.g., Transnationalism, Internalized Orientalism, Indigenization), the course will enhance students’ analytical skills and understanding on the multiple power structures inherent in the influence of mass media and popular cultural flows in East Asian countries (e.g., Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Mainland China).
