Interdisciplinary PhD Programme in Veterinary Medicine

City University of Hong Kong (CityU) is a dynamic, fast-growing university that is pursuing excellence in research and professional education. Currently, the University offers postgraduate research programmes in various disciplines, including business, creative media, energy, engineering, environment, humanities, law, science, social sciences, and other strategic growth areas, including veterinary medicine.

The College of Veterinary Medicine and Life Sciences (formerly titled School of Veterinary Medicine) was launched in Spring 2014 in collaboration with Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine. The CVMLS is the first in Hong Kong and is envisioned as a centre of excellence in animal health education, research and discovery, and clinical care in China and the Asia-Pacific region. A key part of CityU’s Life Sciences Initiative, the College offers a postgraduate research programme leading to interdisciplinary PhD degrees in Veterinary Medicine.

Interdisciplinary PhD Programme in Veterinary Medicine

This is an interdisciplinary programme open to outstanding graduate students who wish to conduct state-of-the-art basic, clinical and translational life sciences research alongside research professionals. The Programme is student-centred and led by faculty who are accessible, engaged and committed to ensuring that our postgraduate students reach their full potential in research, teaching and professional development. The students will participate in research programmes leading to PhD degrees in one of the following areas:

  • Comparative Biomedical Sciences
  • Immunology and Infectious Disease
  • Molecular and Systemic Neuroscience
  • Public Health and Epidemiology

The student will be jointly supervised by a faculty advisor from CityU and a faculty advisor from Cornell University.

Prospective students are encouraged to make contact with CityU faculty members to discuss the proposed research project before application.

Studentship Award

The programme offers studentships to PhD students. Each studentship provides a full stipend for a period of up to three years. For awardees needing more than three years to complete their PhD studies, additional support may be provided. The programme also allows each awardee to spend up to 12 months working in the Cornell faculty advisor’s laboratory in Ithaca, New York.

Information and Application

We invite applications from qualified candidates with a Bachelor degree or higher in all areas of life sciences and medicine, with preference given to graduates having training in veterinary medicine. Please submit an application online (www.sgs.cityu.edu.hk/prospective/apply/procedures) as soon as possible in order to receive full consideration. The entire application package should include academic transcripts, English proficiency test scores (TOEFL or IELTS), a personal statement explaining why the applicant is interested in the programme, and two letters of recommendation. The Admission Committee will take into account the following factors in making admission decisions: academic excellence; research ability and potential; communication and interpersonal skills; and leadership abilities.
