Sustainability Dialogue Series – Solid Waste Management

After the successful launch of the first Dialogue on the theme of Roof Gardens, the second Dialogue on the subject of Solid Waste Management was held on 20 October 2015 (Tuesday). Again, the discussions were very interactive and enthusiastic and participants offered various constructive ideas to improve solid waste management in HK and on campus. The Dialogue started with Mr K K Leung, Vice President of the Holistic Community Association, describing the general situation regarding solid waste in Hong Kong. This was followed by a discussion led by Mr M K Leung, Director of Sustainable Design, Ronald Lu & Partners, on “Building Design and Construction for Solid Waste Management in Hong Kong”. Dr Xiaowei Luo of the Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering then reviewed the pilot CSF study on solid waste audit at CityU.

Hong Kong Tertiary Schools COP21 Challenge

Co-organised by the Hong Kong Sustainable Campus Consortium (HKSCC) and the French Consulate, the “Hong Kong Tertiary Schools COP21 Challenge” was successfully completed during the weekend of 31 October 2015. The Challenge received 19 video entries from 5 publicly-funded universities in its Stage 1 request for video submissions to address the question “How Can Hong Kong Become a Model in Addressing Climate Change Issues?” Of the 19 student teams,10 teams were shortlisted for Stage 2 - a Residential Design Thinking Workshop at the HKU Kadoorie Centre. During the 2-day-1-night Workshop the 10 teams were re-organised into 5 inter-university teams. The teams then presented their innovative ideas on “Green Lifestyles” to a panel of judges comprising the Secretary for Environment, Mr K S Wong; HKSCC Convenor, Professor Linda Li; The Consul General of France in Hong Kong & Macau, Mr Eric Berti and Executive Vice-President (Administration) of HKU, Dr Steven Cannon.

“Waste No Food” Campaign

To support the World Food Day on 16 October 2015, CityU participated in the “Waste No Food” Campaign organised by Friends of the Earth and The Hong Kong and China Gas Company Limited to encourage the CityU community and the general public to reduce food waste and establish a “cherish our food” habit. A special discount was offered by the catering outlets at CityU to customers who ordered “less rice” between 16 October and 15 November 2015.

Sustainable Sea Food Campaign

In November 2015, CityU joins the Kin Hong Seafood Festival organised by the Ocean Recovery Alliance to promote sustainable seafood. CityU staff will have the opportunity to enjoy certified sustainable seafood from the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) in Staff Restaurants (i.e. 8/F City Chinese Restaurant and 9/F City Top). Go ahead and sample the delicious cuisine and play a part in supporting sustainability!

GE3203 Sustainability Development of Hong Kong: A Joint Course of CityU and ASU

“GE3203 Sustainability Development of Hong Kong” was successfully completed on 19 June 2015 (Friday). The course was run for the second year and is an illustration and product of the ‘strategic collaborative relationship’ with Arizona State University (ASU). The innovative pedagogy used in the course is also a prime example of the University’s discovery-enriched curriculum. With this purpose in mind, the University will continue to offer this joint course next year. Please keep an eye out!

Campus Sustainability Fund (CSF)


Revamping of Campus Sustainability Fund

Since its launch in 2012, the Campus Sustainability Fund (CSF) has supported nearly 30 sustainability projects that contribute to the University’s commitment to addressing campus and societal sustainability challenges. The scope of the CSF has been expanded to accommodate two newly added features: ( 1) A priority-theme approach for Campus Sustainability Projects; and (2) Enhanced Sustainability Collaboration Projects. Details of the scheme were discussed in the CSF Sharing Session on 16 November 2015. The deadline for the submission of proposals for the 5th round call is 15 December 2015. The GROW project seeks to develop a community grounded in sustainable food practices and has been expanded in three ways: 1) GROW is now 25% larger than one year ago; 2) GROW will shortly become the first organically-certified garden located on a Hong Kong university campus; and 3) a new student volunteer programme has attracted 20 new student GROW members, who are partnering with CityU staff to grow organic vegetables. Earth Hour at the Student Residence (Hall 10)

Hall 10 of the student residence is targeting a 15-20% electricity reduction during its project period of 2015-2016 relative to the previous year. This set target is based on the assumption that students will use less electricity when they are presented with real-time information on electricity demand, a system of incentives/penalties and clear messaging within the hall. Building on the last point, Hall 10 recently hosted an Earth Hour on 15 October by asking students to turn off electricity for one hour and gather on the student residence’s lawns. About a hundred students took part and they engaged in reflective chats over energy use whilst participating in acoustic guitar circles and Indian henna painting.

Green Talk: Marine Conservation in Hong Kong

On 9 November 2015, Samantha Lee, Assistant Conservation Manager (Marine) from WWF – Hong Kong, talked to 42 CityU students about Marine Conservation in Hong Kong. During the talk, she shared her insights on Chinese white dolphin conservation, marine protected areas, marine debris and her current marine conservation work on fisheries. She stressed that there is an urgent need for more and bigger protected areas to secure the future of our marine life and conserve our vulnerable marine environment for future generations.
