Office of the Vice-President (Student Affairs) (OVPSA) is committed to developing our support services to our students, both during their learning journey at university and as they begin their careers. To maximise the value of your education, it is essential to develop important skills and an open mindset. That is how we help. OVPSA is here to ensure you feel secure and confident, and remain curious. Our two line offices—SDS and SRO—offer so much to look forward to and get involved in. These opportunities include over 80 student groups and societies, chances to develop leadership and interpersonal skills, sports and cultural programmes, career advice, and hall events.

Whether you encounter us while pursuing an internship, seeking financial assistance, enjoying extracurricular recreation, adjusting to student accommodation, volunteering, joining one of our events, using our career support services to help springboard yourself into an exciting new job, or in one of our many other capacities, we are here to support you as unique individuals who have a lot to offer to our society.

I have been a part of university life in Hong Kong for over 40 years—through my own study, and through teaching in different universities—and I still get a buzz from being on campus. Even with all sorts of challenges around us, these are exciting, important, and precious days. You are where you need to be.

I have been with CityU now for over 26 years, and I continue to be inspired by our students and their potential. The time you spend at university is not where learning starts and stops—it is just one chapter in a story of discovery and accomplishment; a chapter that will hopefully spark a lifelong love of learning.

Even after nearly three decades in education, I continue to find ways to broaden my own horizons. As professors, we typically teach and pursue research projects, but it is a testament to the spirit and energy of our students that I am writing to you as Dean of Students—because I have stepped into a truly valuable role, with the opportunity to continue learning from you.

As a bridge between the University and students, I wish that your time at CityU does more than just equip and empower you with the knowledge and skills for academic success. It will also create happy memories that will accompany you for a lifetime. Being involved in university life is like adding a little salt to a dish. You can’t see it when it’s mixed in, but you can taste the difference. It enhances flavour. Just as your involvement in extracurricular activities will enrich your university experience.

I encourage you to engage with others, whether peers, industry professionals, or your community. Volunteer with, connect with, and leverage the experiences and insights of those from different cultures, unique backgrounds, or sectors, and share your own story—you will find it enlightening.

During your time with us, I hope you grow to see and appreciate the big picture, and your own place within it. It is my aspiration to support the dreams and ambitions of our students, and I hope you all think deeply about how you want to grow, change, and achieve. We have the tools and opportunities waiting and ready for you to do just that.
