4.6 Phases of Evaluation |
The evaluation of students' performance in fieldwork is a continuous process starting with the students' first day of field placement and culminating in a final written assessment at the end of the placement. It is important for the fieldwork instructor to identify as soon as possible the students' pattern of learning and the difficulties encountered. Continuous sharing should take place throughout the placement in order to promote the students' growth by strengthening positive features and seeking improvement in areas that need more attention. Towards the middle of the placement period, fieldwork instructors are expected to prepare a written mid-placement assessment of their students' fieldwork performance. The assessment should be shared and discussed with the student concerned by going through the items contained in the Mid-Placement Evaluation Report (Appendix 5.8) and by reviewing the learning contract agreed to at the beginning of the placement, so as to review progress and adjust learning/working plans. The written report, together with the student's own evaluation and other necessary reports, should be sent to the Fieldwork Coordinator (BSW) not later than one week after the mid point of the placement. At the end of the placement, fieldwork instructors are required to complete the Fieldwork Evaluation Form (Appendix 5.9) for the students concerned. The latter are also required to write a self-evaluation report (Appendix 5.10). A terminal evaluation session would then be held. This session, besides appraising a student's performance in the placement, should also be used to promote professional growth by indicating explicitly to the student areas where growth has occurred and where improvement is still needed and why. These comments should be, as detail as possible, written down after each assessment areas in the Evaluation Form (Appendix 5.9). The completed evaluation form, together with the students' Self-evaluation Report and Feedback Questionnaire, and the Agency Feedback Form, should be kept in the Student File and returned by the fieldwork instructor to the Department's Fieldwork Coordinator in person within one week after the termination of placement. |
