At 6:30 pm on Monday 21st September, Multi-function Hall A hosted the City-Youth Empowerment Kick-Off Ceremony. Having joined last semester, this was an opportunity for me to re-connect with old members and meet new ones. But as I walked into the venue and took in the scene in front of me, it was a moment of epiphany where I understood how many of us, regardless of our cultural backgrounds and differences, have come together to support a common cause.

The ceremony involved a warm welcome from Dr Elaine Au, who convinced the gathered crowd of the rewarding experiences we as volunteers are about to embark upon. As the students listened intently, a range of guest speakers such as Professor Alex Kwan (Head of Applied Social Studies Department) and Professor Paul Lam VP (SA) took time to share short stories and their thoughts about volunteering and the responsibilities that come with it.

Reflections did not only come from Professors but also from former members. Law Ka Ping, Li Tong and Tilen Pigac were present to share their humorous and most memorable experiences with the new students, creating a sense of excitement and understanding of the volunteer projects ahead.  To further emphasize the variety of services under the Project, a touching sign language song was also performed by volunteers, demonstrating the skills they had learnt during their interaction with children with special needs last year.

New Project Officers Chi, Fat, Nicola and Lincoln were also introduced. The evening was rounded off with a meal and the chance for members to share their excitement and energy for the beginning of a new year and new projects ahead.

Nevertheless, even with the anticipation ahead, members of ResLink and I would like to take this opportunity to bid Nokia and Beatrice (former Project Officers) a fond farewell, thank them for their generous efforts in previous events and wish them all luck for their new adventures. I personally am looking forward to my own City Youth adventures!
