Definition of Terms

  1. Commuting Time
  2. Home Size (Conversion Guide: 1 square metre = 10.76 square feet)

    The Home Size should be described and defined as "Saleable Area". The Saleable Area of a unit comprises the floor area exclusively allocated to that unit including balconies and other similar features but excluding common areas such as staircases, lift shafts, lobbies and communal toilets. It shall be the area contained within the enclosing walls of the unit measured up to the exterior face of an external wall or the centre line of a separating wall between adjoining units, as the case may be. Enclosing walls separating a unit from a lightwell, a lift shaft or any similar vertical shaft, or a common area, shall be deemed an external wall and its full thickness shall be included. All internal partitions and columns within the unit shall be included. ("Code of Measuring Practice", 1st Edition March 1999, The Hong Kong Institute of Surveyors).

    Public Rental Flats

    Private Flats
    You can obtain information and work out the Saleable Area from the:

    1. Sale or purchase agreement;
    2. Mortgage document;
    3. Rental contract;
    4. Management office of your estate;

    6. Websites of real estate agencies; or

  3. Number of household members living together
    • The numbers of persons, including the applicant, who live together and make common provision for essentials for living AND stay overnight in the flat not less than 4 times a week. These persons need not be related.
    • If any family member who works as baby-sitter or care-taker, whose client does not stay overnight in the flat, the client should not be included.
    • Pet (eg. dogs / cats) are not included.
  4. Unfavorable home environment

    This section offers space for applicants to report their unfavorable home environment and/or special conditions. The conditions must be current and will not be changed in the near future. Lists of examples of valid and invalid conditions are provided below for reference.

              Valid conditions
    1. Local students whose home is not in Hong Kong *
    2. Living in restricted area with limited services of public transportation *
    3. Living in temporary housing/squatter area/roof top dwelling
    4. Living in outlying islands with ferry as the only means of transportation

              Invalid conditions
    1. Noisy/crowded environment
    2. Sharing a bedroom with siblings of the same/opposite gender
    3. High crime rate in the nearby district
    4. High traveling cost
    5. Frequent early morning classes/ late evening classes
    6. Long distance from home to the workplace of placement
  5. Leadership Qualities
    • Recognized leadership positions are listed in the pull-down menu of the application form. Applicants can choose one leadership position held in the most current two academic years, which attains the highest scores. An academic year is defined to commence in September and end in August of the following year.
    • Vice leadership positions e.g. Vice-President / Vice Head Prefect and etc., will be regarded as a formal leader of a group in general, i.e. President / Head Prefect.
  6. Academic Merits, Special Achievements and Services to Community
    • Applicants can indicate and specify the appropriate achievements within the most current two academic years. The definition of an academic year applies.
