Newly admitted Research Degree Students

The University offers Student Residence for full-time Research Degree Students. Higher priority will be granted to UGC-funded Research Degree Students.
Application will be administered on a yearly basis. Due to the very limited residence places and increasing demand, the University is unable to offer residence places to research degree students for their entire study period. Furthermore, there is no guarantee at all that students will be granted residence places during their studies.
Full-time research degree students* within normal study period

There is no guarantee that students will be granted a residence place during their studies. Late offers will be considered subject to availability of hall places.
Newly admitted research degree students in Academic Year 2025/26 (i.e., whose commencement date on 1 September 2025 and thereafter)
- Higher priority will be granted at Ma On Shan Compound in the residential year 2025/26 during their first year of study (i.e., Academic Year 2025/26).
The newly admitted research degree students shall include those being awarded with prestigious scholarships under SGS or admitted via Express Admission of Research Talents for PhD Programmes.
Such privilege is NOT transferrable to any subsequent years of study (i.e., the 2nd year of study onwards).
For their 2nd year of study onwards, lot-drawing mechanism would be used in allocating residence places at Cornwall Street/ Jockey Club House located at Kowloon Tong Compound (subject to their timely submission of hall application and in the same pool with current research degree students).
If all eligible applications have been processed, residence places available will be offered on a rolling basis to the following students:
- full-time research degree students in non-UGC-funded programmes
- full-time research degree students who have applied for extension of study (out-timers)
- full-time non-local postgraduate students
- research staff
Offer of residence places will be made on a short-term basis. A surcharge of 25% will be levied on “out-time” students and students of non-UGC-funded programmes. An additional 35% will be levied for those who switch to i) part-time status while holding full-time employment with the University and; ii) research staff. Allocation will be considered on a case-by-case basis, subject to room availability.
Hall places are to be offered to successful applicants in a full residential year.**

** Important Notes:- The period of stay will be decided by the Student Residence Office and will be subject to review in case of changes in student status, mode of study, normal study period and funding source of study programme and/or other circumstances.
- The period of stay for research degree students will normally be granted for a full residential year with the exact dates and duration announced by the Student Residence Office. Students upon completion of their normal study period will be required to move out of the Student Residence before the end date of normal study period.

Applicants will receive hall offer via email after the release of results, normally in late May. Successful applicants are solely responsible for offer acceptance by paying the hall confirmation fee within a specified period of time. Your hall offer will be forfeited and released to applicants on the waiting list if you do not accept the hall offer by settling the hall confirmation fee on time. The forfeited hall offer cannot be retrieved.
Roommate Preference Indication
- After paying the hall confirmation fee, applicants can indicate their preferred roommates living in the same room.
- The success of matching preferred roommates depends on mutual indication, room availability and the number of applicants. Application may fail if no vacant rooms are available, and/or the applicants are not mutually indicated.

Room Type
There are Double Rooms and Single Rooms available at Ma On Shan Compound. Rooms will be assigned to residents of same gender. Please click Student Room to know more about the room layout. - General Principles for Room Assignment
- Applicants will be invited to indicate their preferences of hall and room type when submitting the hall application.
- Hall and room type will be assigned by lot-drawing. Residents are not allowed to change rooms unless request is made and duly approved by the Residence Master and Student Residence Office.
- No room assignment will be made if successful applicants fail to complete application procedures properly or to confirm their hall offers.
- After paying hall confirmation fee, applicant will be invited to indicate their preferred roommates of the same gender with mutual agreements.
- Applicants' indications of preferred roommates will be considered as far as possible. There is no guarantee that students with hall offers will be assigned to a particular unit, room type, or with specific roommate. Final room assignments will be subject to room availability and hall admission policies. The Student Residence Office or the Residence Master reserves the right to make alternative assignment decisions or re-assign students as appropriate.
- Applicants who have not indicated their preferred roommates by the deadline will be randomly assigned by the computer system.
- Requests for room swapping / change will NOT be entertained before check-in and it will only be entertained between 3rd October and 30th April.
- Unoccupied Bedspace / Rooms
Accommodation are assigned on the principle of ensuring maximum design capacity. Any unoccupied bed(s)/room(s) shall be assigned to new residents(s) who may arrive throughout the residential period, and hence please keep the unoccupied bedspaces intact and get prepared for your roommate's check-in at any time during the residential period. No prior notice will be given. Illegal occupation will lead to disciplinary action with penalty charges.
