Associate of Legal Studies Go

Introduction

The Associate of Legal Studies (ALS) has no exact counterpart in Hong Kong.  It still remains UGC funded.  The programme is aimed at providing a broad-based and practical education for those whose work requires a knowledge of law and legal procedures.  The programme includes general principles of law and emphasizes the acquisition of relevant analytical and practical skills.  Many ALS students come from solicitors' firms; others from a wide range of other law-related jobs, especially in the public sector, e.g. the offices of the judiciary, Department of Justice, the Police, Customs and Excise, and Immigration; and others work in corporate business, especially company administration.

Programme Aims

This programme aims to provide broad-based training in principles of law as well as in developing practical skills for employees in the law office or in law-related employment.  Such training will enhance students' competency and efficiency in performing their tasks and give them a broader perspective of their roles.  Considerable emphasis will be placed on the ethical standards and the professional responsibilities required from those in law office or in law-related employment.  Upon graduation students will be equipped with an educational base for further law-related studies and career advancement.

Programme Structure

The programme is a part-time evening programme.  It extends over three academic years.

Years 1 and 2 concentrate on the acquisition of substantive knowledge of the main areas of law.  The sources of law, legal institutions and legal methods are all examined in the context of the Hong Kong legal system.  Attention is paid to the law of China both as a comparison to the Hong Kong common law based system and as an increasingly important subject in its own right.

Year 3 continues the study of substantive principles but emphasizes the practical skills involved in applying law to real day-to-day situations.  Qualified local practitioners are brought in as lecturers and tutors to develop the necessary analytical and communicative skills needed to capitalize upon the substantive knowledge acquired in the first two years.

Students will choose their subjects from a number of electives ensuring appropriate choices both for the law office and other law-related employments in public or private sectors.
