We are pleased to announce that our master’s degree programme, MSc in Engineering Management, has been selected for sponsorship under the Targeted Taught Postgraduate Programmes Fellowships Scheme by the University Grants Committee of the Hong Kong government. The award recognizes our programme’s contributions to sustainable city and regional development. Eligible local students admitted to the programme in the 2021/2022 academic year will receive a subsidy up to HK$120,000.
Dr. Peter Tse and his research team has developed the world’s first non-destructive-testing based inspection system that can detect corrosion in buried and wall-covered pipes.

Congratulations to CityU students on winning the 1st runner-up of Classified Post Hackathon (Media Category). The Hackathon is a 24 hours challenge for participants to build winning digital solutions for large corporates. The team with members of five CityU students, namely, Chan Tsz Ching (SEEM), So Nga Yin (SEEM), Ng Tsz Wing, Nick (CS), Kwok Ping Chung (CS), Lo Shu Fai (CS), was named the 1st runner-up.
SEEM is deeply saddened at the loss of Emeritus Professor Venuvinod Patri, who passed away on 4 October 2018. Emeritus Professor Patri is the founding Head of Department of Manufacturing Engineering (the former SEEM). We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and friends.

The competition offered an opportunity for students to work on a real-life quality management case and propose resolution. The CityU team with members of four SEEM students, namely, Chan Tsz Lok, Kwok Oon Hei, Yu Lai Po and So Hiu Ying, was named the Champion. Dr. K.S. Chin is the mentor of the Champion team. Another CityU team with members of four SEEM students, namely, Chan Ka San, Lee Tsz Kwan, Wong Wing To and Lam Yuk Chun, was named the 1st runner-up.

In order to support Hong Kong startup in taking advantages of technology for their businesses, Department of Systems Engineering and Engineering Management (City University of Hong Kong), IEEE Technology and Engineering Management Society HK Chapter, The China & Hong Kong Enterprise Market Development Association and Technology Incubation Network co-organized a seminar to demonstrate how the web-based business solutions help SMB and startup to become a Multinational corporation (MNC). The experienced speakers inspired the participants with their thoughts and findings. Dr Hongyi Sun as our speakers, sharing how to grow a startup via the 9P Canvas. Dr. Hongyi Sun from SEEM and four industry speakers shared their entrepreneurship knowledge and experiences on how to grow a startup with technologies and management tools.
Congratulations to CHAN Lok Pan, a TQE student from SEEM department under the supervision of Ir Dr. Peter W. Tse, on winning the 2nd runner-up of HKIE (Hong Kong Institution of Engineers) Manufacturing and Industrial Division (MI) Student Project Competition 2016-2017.
The competition aims to encourage students to stretch their intellectual and practical competence in the application of MI engineering technologies in real life cases. The organizer wishes the students can immerse this idea into their project works so as to deepen their understanding on the importance of MI engineering technologies to our daily lives.
Organized by Department of Systems Engineering and Engineering Management (City University of Hong Kong), co-organized by School of Management (Xi’an Jiao Tong University), International Research Conference on Systems Engineering and Management Science 2017 (IRC-SEMS 2017) took place in Xi’an China on 21-22 April 2017. The conference provides a valuable chance for academics and researchers to exchange experience and research findings in various disciplines of Systems Engineering and Management Science. Our SEEM student, Mr. Gao Fei, received a Best Student Paper Award.

SEEM hosted a half day workshop “TBRS Railway workshop: Maintaining High Reliability Standards For Railway Operations” on 23 March 2017. It was our honor to have Dr. Huel-Sheng Tsay and Dr. C.C.Chang as our speakers, sharing lots of ideas based on their rich experiences in Taiwan Metro. More than 30 faculty, students and representative from MTR Corporation Limited participated and discussed some researches topics related to metro system.

Workshop on High-speed Rail Operation for Safety and Reliability was organized by Department of SEEM (City University of Hong Kong), supported by State Key Laboratory of Rail Control and Safety (Beijing Jiaotong University) and Advanced Public Transportation Research Center (National Taiwan University) on 25 November 2016. It was our pleasure to have 11 speakers from China, Taiwan and Hong Kong, shared and exchanged their expert research and experience in high-speed rail and related topics. There were around 100 academics, students, representatives from public and private sectors: e.g. Census and Statistics Department, Electrical and Mechanical Services Department, Fire Services Department, MTR Corporation Limited, Arup, ATKINS, etc. With invaluable contribution of every participant, our workshop successfully provided a great platform for innovative creation of research ideas of high-speed rail studies.

Co-organized by Department of Systems Engineering and Engineering Management (City University of Hong Kong), School of Economics and Management (University of Chinese Academy of Sciences) and Academy of Mathematics and Systems Science (University of Chinese Academy of Sciences), International Research Conference on Systems Engineering and Management Science 2016 (IRC-SEMS 2016) took place in Beijing China on 1 and 2 April 2016. The conference provided a research platform for academics and researchers, particularly young faculty and graduate students from Hong Kong, Macau, Mainland China and neighboring countries, to share and exchange experience and latest research findings in various disciplines of Systems Engineering and Management Science. Over 140 academics and researchers from local and overseas universities and research institutes joined the conference. We are looking forward to IRC-SEMS 2017 to be held in Xian China in April 2017. Ir Dr. Peter W. TSE (Dept. of SEEM) received the CSE Discovery and Innovation Gala Award on June 24, 2015. The CSE Discovery and Innovation Gala 2015 exhibition, which was held from June 24 to 25, 2015, was organized by the Co-operative Education Centre, College of Science and Engineering of CityU. The selection panel of the award included faulty staff, academic researchers and prestige industrial practitioners. The award was certified and presented by the Dean of CSE, Prof. Hon Yan.

Dr. Peter Tse’s research proposal "Innovative Guided-wave Sensor and System for Inspecting the Integrity and Corrosion Extent of Buried or Covered Pipes" has recently been approved and funded by Innovative and Technology Commission (ITC) at the level of HK$2M.

Congratulations to Professor Alain Bensoussan on receiving the prestigious award SIAM 2014 W. T. and Idalia Reid Prize! The W. T. and Idalia Reid Prize is awarded every year to an individual for research in, or other contributions to, the broadly defined areas of differential equations and control theory.
SEEM SEAM Lab and HKIE MI Division jointly organized a technical workshop on "Importance and Certification of Engineering Asset Management (EAM)" at the HKIE Headquarters. Dr. Peter TSE was the main speaker of the workshop. He shared his views on the roles of EAM to a company and the key requirements in acquiring the certification of EAM. The workshop was well-attended by more than 80 participants.
SEEM co-organized the Chinese Quality Forum (CQF) 2014 at CityU on 14 March 2014. CQF 2014 brought together the Chinese scholars, consulting experts, practicing managers in quality management and relevant areas from Singapore, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Mainland China to share their experience and exchange ideas on the theme “Quality Management in Chinese Way”. Dr. Kwai-sang Chin delivered a talk on“Essential to Quality Improvement: An Organizational Innovation Management Model in China Environment”.
Mr Conrad Wong, JP, Chairman of Occupational Safety and Health Council, presents the "OSH Best Project Award of 2013" to SEEM PhD student Ms. Zhang Tingru for her study on the effect of sleepiness on traffic accident rate. Ms. Zhang’s supervisor is Dr. Alan Chan.
Congratulations to Prof. Kwok L. TSUI on being named a Fellow of American Society for Quality (ASQ) for outstanding academic achievements and distinction in the field of quality; for significant contributions to robust parameter design, statistical process control, data mining and industrial statistics; for his leading role in the interface between statistics and quality engineering; and for pre-eminent service to the profession at the highest level.
Thirty teachers and researchers from the mainland and Taiwan participated in the “Symposium and Train-the-Trainer Workshop for Innovation and Entrepreneurship Education” organised by City University of Hong Kong (CityU) from 2 to 6 December.
Dr. Alan Chan Hoi-shou, Associate Professor in the Department of Systems Engineering and Engineering Management, was appointed Justice of the Peace by the HKSAR Government on July 1, 2013. He has been re-appointed Vice Chairman of the Occupational Safety and Health Council for a term of two years with effect from 22 August, 2013.
The SEEM PhD student, Mr. SHEN Changqing, who is supervised by Dr. Peter TSE and Prof. KONG Fanrang under the USTC-CityU joint PhD program, has been awarded the following scholarships for his good research outputs during his PhD study:

Highlights: In Taiwan, there are three nuclear power plants with six units in operation, and now sharing about 20% of electricity. The safety and operational performance of these units are very high. The new energy policy after the Fukushima accident and its impact on nuclear power development in Taiwan was addressed in the talk.
Dr. Oscar Hui Kwan-san, Lecturer from the Department of Systems Engineering and Engineering Management, invented an air purification technology that converts air pollutants into harmless by-products by ozone catalytic oxidation (OCO).
Congratulations to Prof. Li Han Xiong, co-chair of Technical Committee on Intelligent Learning in Control Systems, on receiving the IEEE Most Active SMC Technical Committee Award at the 2012 SMC Conference. The award recognizes the committee’s ongoing involvement in interdisciplinary aspects of integration of learning and control in the area of control, intelligent and autonomous systems.
The Centre for System Informatics Engineering (CSIE) at City University of Hong Kong (CityU) has received a generous donation of 20 sets of LabVIEW Core Development software package and its associating toolkits from National Instruments Corporation (National Instruments).
Congratulations to Dr. Hongyi SUN who is one of the six teachers in the University to receive the Teaching Excellence Award for 2011/2012. The award recognizes his new curriculum development, innovative teaching philosophy, scholarly activities related to teaching, leadership and other achievement.
BETQE students participated the HKSQ (Hong Kong Society for Quality) Inter-university Company-based Student Project Competition 2012 in March 2012. The competition offered an opportunity for students to work on a real-life quality management case and propose resolution. Among totally nine teams from four Hong Kong universities, the CityU team with members of four BETQE students Year-3 students, namely, CHAN Oi Yee, DU Ying Si, HO Hoi Ning and HE Mei Feng, got the 2nd Runner Up prize. Their improvement topic is "How to reduce the electricity consumption and maintain healthy environment of a livestock farm?".
Prof. K.L. Tsui and Prof. Min Xie visited Tsinghua University on 26 February, and attended THU-CITYU Workshop on High Speed Rail Network (HSRN) 2012. Prof. Tsui presented a talk on "Research in Prognostics and Systems Health Management" and Prof. Xie gave one on "Research on reliability of complex systems and some related issues".
With many countries looking to develop high-speed railways to move growing populations faster over long distances, the international railway community increasingly emphasizes the need for continuous improvements to enhance safeguards for passengers. SEEM organized a seminar on "Safety Management and Risk Assessment in Railway Operations" on 24 February 2012 together with Hong Kong Society for Quality, American Society for Quality - Hong Kong, and Institute of Railway Signal Engineers - Hong Kong Section. This seminar aims to provide participants with an updated view on contemporary policies and practices of safety management and risk assessment in railways operations. There are more than 70 people from academic and industrial sectors participated this half-day seminar.

Dr. LU Xin-Jiang received Hiwin Doctoral Dissertation Award 2011 (首屆上銀優秀機械博士論文獎). His PhD supervisor is Prof. H.X. LI.
Dr. Peter Tse Wai-tat, Associate Professor from the Department of MEEM, said lift ropes could snap if they were not properly maintained. Use over a long period of time can lead to abrasions and metal fatigue, increasing the risk of an accident.
Mr. CHEN Yin, a PhD student, won a First Class Award at the 7th National Postgraduate Mathematics Contest in Modelling for his work on the early detection of mutated genes that can cause colorectal cancer, together with two other master's degree graduates from the Department of Computer Science and the Department of Information Systems. They were one of the 61 teams to receive the Award selected from among 1,995 teams formed by nearly 6,000 higher degree students from 229 institutions across the country.
Congratulations to Prof. Han-Xiong Li on being elevated to IEEE Fellow for his contributions to fuzzy logic control and its applications, effective 1 January 2011. IEEE Fellow is a distinction and the highest grade of membership in the IEEE reserved for select IEEE members whose extraordinary accomplishments in IEEE-designated fields of interest are deemed fitting of this prestigious grade elevation. Each year, following a rigorous evaluation procedure, the IEEE Fellow Committee recommends a select group of recipients for one of the Association's most prestigious honours, elevation to IEEE Fellow.
