SEE Dean Prof. Benjamin Horton Calls for Bold Climate Action in SCMP Opinion Piece
Prof. Benjamin Horton, Dean of the School of Energy and Environment (SEE) at City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK), recently published a compelling opinion article in the South China Morning Post (SCMP) titled “On front line of climate change, Hong Kong must take bold steps now”.
Reflecting on his first four months in Hong Kong, Prof. Horton shares his observations of extreme weather events — including historic rainstorms, typhoons, and heatwaves — as clear indicators of a rapidly changing climate.
In the article, he outlines seven priority areas for bold climate action, ranging from accelerating renewable energy adoption and transforming urban mobility to enhancing governance and investing in climate technologies. While acknowledging the Hong Kong government’s progress toward carbon neutrality, he emphasizes the need for deeper, more coordinated efforts.
Prof. Horton also highlights Hong Kong’s strategic position to lead in climate resilience, particularly through collaboration with mainland China’s growing green innovation sector. His message is clear: the decisions made today will shape Hong Kong’s future as a livable, competitive, and climate-smart city.
