Students taking the undergraduate course, SEE4218 Water Quality Engineering, offered by the School participated in the visit to the Sha Tin Water Treatment Works on 16 February 2015 (Monday).
Sha Tin Water Treatment Works is the largest Water Treatment Works in Hong Kong. It receives raw water mainly from Guangdong, Plover Cove Reservoir and High Island Reservoir, for treatment works meeting the water demand for the Kowloon region and the northern parts of Hong Kong Island.
On the day of the visit, students were briefed with a presentation citing the design modules and procedures involved in water treatment and sludge excavation. A guided tour around the site covering the Monitoring Control Room, laboratories, filtration beds, sludge collectors offered a chance for the students to understand the treatment works in practice. Backwashing of filter bed was also demonstrated for the students. The visit ended with a technical session, where students were active in discussion with the speaker.
