Asked his opinion about how the Philippine government views OBOR, Prof. Thompson replied that: “Because of the South China Sea dispute between the Philippines and China, the Philippine government is not sure about the motivation behind OBOR." Thompson also noted that the Philippine government understood the importance of China’s OBOR initiative and - particularly in view of the poor infrastructure in the Philippines - many elites in the country in fact welcome this policy. Prof. Thompson thinks that the most important thing for China to do now is to further promote OBOR so as to win the support of politicians and Philippine society as a whole. He particularly noted that the Philippines is still watching China’s attitude towards the ASEAN RO-RO network (ARN). As the Philippines is among one of the first batch of countries who have quit TPP and then joined AIIB, they are eager to have the support of China. For this article in Chinese, please click here. |
