Alumni Giving Club Student Exchange Scholarships

Purpose
To provide partial financial support to BBA undergraduate students who have been selected to attend exchange programme in 2009/2010, with an aim to broaden the outlook of students; enrich their knowledge in social, economic & political affairs; and enable students to exchange ideas in different perspectives by experiencing various cultures in overseas countries. 

Eligibility
All outbound exchange students who are full-time UGC-funded local undergraduate students from College of Business and have met the following criteria :

1.    have achieved, normally, a GPA of 3 or above in the last semester/term of study. However, outstanding academic performance would definitely be an asset.

2.    have possessed promising attributes such as leadership potential, aspiration for advancement, etc;

3.    have proven financial difficulties;

4.    have fulfilled, before departing for exchange studies, the English language requirements# for exchange programme using English as the medium of instruction, or other language proficiency or special requirement as specified for individual programme; and

5.    have not participated in similar University-subsidized overseas exchange programmes.

Priority will be given to those (i) with track record on extra-curricular activities or community service and (ii) have demonstrated financial difficulty for the exchange study. 

Scholarship Value and Number of Awards

There shall be around 30 Scholarships in the 2009/2010 academic year to cover partial costs for return economy class airfare, accommodation and incidental expenses.  Details are as follows :

 Condition

1.    The scholarship recipients are allowed to receive sponsorship from Student Exchange Fund concurrently for the outbound exchange programme.  However, the University reserves the right to demand for a partial or full refund of the scholarship should any scholarship recipient fail to complete the exchange programme or he/she fails to achieve a minimum pass grade in each of his/her  subject(s).

2.    Selected students are required to attend a three-hour “Pre-departure Training Session for Scholarship Recipients” which will be held:
a)
      At 14:00  on 18 May 2009 (Monday)
b)
      At 18:00 on 20 May 2009 (Wednesday)
(
Student may choose to attend any one of the above two sessions.)
Scholarships will be withdrawn for students failing to fulfill the requirement unless prior approval has been sought from SDS. 

3.    Scholarship recipients are required to (i) submit a 5-day “Exchange Diary” during their overseas study within one month upon students’ return to Hong Kong and (ii) attend a sharing session to share their studies with other BBA students after overseas study.

4.    80% of the scholarship value shall be paid when the recipients can present the offering letter issued by the overseas universities. The 20% of the scholarship value shall be paid when the recipients have submitted their exchange diary on exchange study to SDS within one month upon recipients’ return to Hong Kong.

5.    Scholarship recipients are obliged to attend the scholarship presentation ceremony as organized by the University.

6.    Scholarship recipients are obliged to donate at least HK$200 annually to CityU for student support purpose via “CityU Alumni Giving Club” after graduation. 

Application Procedure and Deadline
Eligible students should submit their completed application forms and relevant supporting document by 31 March 2009 to Student Development Services. Late submission will not be considered.  

Shortlisted candidates will be invited to attend a selection interview to be held on 16 /17 April 2009. Candidates failing to attend the selection interview in person will not be considered.

Remark:

# English language requirements:

(i)     A minimum TOEFL score of 213 (computer-based test) or 550 (paper-based test) or 79 (internet-based test) or IELTS Band 6.5 or above; OR

(ii)    Grade C or above in one of the following subjects:

a.    HKALE Use of English / English Literature

b.    GCE A/AS Level English Language/English Literature/English Language and Literature (grade B for  

       subjects at GCSE Level)

c.     English course approved by Senate for fulfilling the University language requirement

 

Scholarship applicants are STRONGLY advised to plan early and fulfill the University language requirement in a timely manner.
