What is
MFACM?
The Master of Fine Arts in Creative Media is the first of its
kind in Hong Kong. A degree with a long history in many prestigious
European and North American universities, the MFA is commonly
regarded as the highest level of academic qualification available in
the creative arts. While the MFA once was primarily associated with
the traditional fine arts, such as music and painting, it has since
the 1960s become the standard “terminal” degree in programmes
specializing in more technology-intensive creative fields, including
computer-based media production.

About This Programme
The self-financing MFA introduced in 2006 is intended to continue
the mission and success of the UGC-funded MFA programme that was
established in 2001. In keeping with the original vision, the
programme will provide professional training in creative media
production with a cross-disciplinary focus on art, culture and
technology. The programme will also carry on its global vision and
place strong emphases on cultural diversities in order to strengthen
its role in fostering new talents and creativity that meet future
demands and challenges. The MFACM programme is aimed to become a hub
and laboratory for creative exchange and professional collaboration
regionally as well as internationally.

What You Will Be Studying
The MFACM is designed as an intensive, project-based programme.
The programme consists of 54 credit units, and will be offered in
a full-time (two-year) mode. The curriculum includes 24 credits of
required courses, and 30 credits of elective courses. Out of the
24 credits of required courses, a total of 21 credits are
dedicated to project-based studio classes. The other required
course within the curriculum is “SM5303 Digital Audiovisual Culture”, a
Year 1 Semester A course intended to provide students with a
contextual foundation in aesthetic, cultural, and theoretical
principles relevant to the programme.
The elective courses will be organized into three different
areas, namely: Studio, Theory/Critical Intervention and Benchmark.
Students are required to take a minimum number of credit units
within each area. Within the Studio component, courses are grouped
into three areas of interest (Animation, Audiovisual Media,
Interactive Media). These areas of interest are not meant to be
rigid disciplinary requirements but rather suggestive guidance for
the students in planning their study and
career.

This sequence is based on the premise that students
should have a reasonable amount of freedom to shape the direction
of their programmes (under the advice of faculty mentors). It is
expected that students with a strong arts background and those
with a strong science and technology background will select
somewhat divergent paths of study, based on differences in
philosophical orientation as well as educational background and
experience. The curriculum is designed to accommodate the
interests and goals of both groups of students, and to encourage
the crossing of disciplinary boundaries.
