What is the
MAMC?
The MAMC is designed as an advanced training in media and
cultural studies, an interdisciplinary field with roots in both the
Social Sciences and the Humanities. It provides an intellectual
framework for the study of modern media and culture, as well as an
understanding of some of the substantive areas of theory and methods
in research. It addresses questions of importance and urgency in
contemporary society, and puts contemporary debates in historical
and theoretical context.
The specific aims and objectives of the MAMC are:
- To develop the creative and intellectual
competence required of future leaders of the media industry, as
well as related professions in which knowledge of media history
and methodologies for analyzing media texts and institutions are
increasingly beneficial.
- To nourish a critical and up-to-date
understanding of contemporary issues in the media industry, an
awareness of and sensitivity to the international nature of key
issues, and a capacity to view developments in the media industry
in a broader critical, historical, social, political and economic
perspective.
- To equip students with extensive knowledge of
local and international developments in relevant areas of media
practices, with an emphasis on cultivating skills in critical
inquiry and analysis.
- To provide to the local and regional media
industry graduates who demonstrate a high level of originality and
a commitment to the highest standards of professional ethics, and
who are capable of taking on significant responsibilities and
leadership roles in the industry.
- To provide media-literate graduates to other
relevant professions, such as primary and secondary teaching, arts
and entertainment management and administration, journalism, and
business consulting.
- To provide a substantial postgraduate foundation
for students who are interested in pursuing further study in MPhil
and/or PhD programmes.
MAMC graduates are expected to enter positions in media-related
fields, especially in positions where employers value candidates who
have developed a range of critical abilities, a creative and
imaginative approach to problem solving, and skills of analysis and
presentation. An extensive knowledge of the modern culture and
communications industries and their products provides an especially
appropriate academic background for many graduates to go on to work
in some aspect of the media, for example, in journalism,
broadcasting, advertising and publicity, and arts and cultural
administration. The MAMC is also expected to complement the new
liberal studies curriculum in Hong Kong secondary schools, where
there will be a need for teachers who are knowledgeable in the
relevant areas of that curriculum, which includes a significant
commitment to media and the arts. In addition, the MAMC is intended
to provide a postgraduate foundation for students interested in
pursuing additional qualifications (e.g., MPhil, PhD).

About This Programme
The programme consists of 30 credit units, and will be offered in
a part-time (two-year) mode with provision for a full-time mode
(one-year) based on demand. The curriculum includes 9 credits of required
courses, and 21 credits of elective courses. Required courses
include a survey of key theoretical material and modes of analysis
relevant to a humanities-oriented media studies programme, and a
small-scale capstone research project intended both to give students
the opportunity to pursue a specific topic of interest, and to
demonstrate their ability to conduct postgraduate-level research and
synthetic analysis. Other elective courses within the curriculum are
clustered within two primary and complementary thematic emphases: 1)
Media Theory and History; and 2) Analysis and Methods of
Institutional Practice. Depending on the needs and interests of
individual students, it may be appropriate for some to emphasize one
of these areas, or to take an approximately equal number of courses
within each.
Assessment in all courses normally will be
entirely through coursework, which will consist primarily of written
assignments (e.g., analytical essays, research papers, thought
pieces, journals, critical responses and reviews, ethnographic
study). Practical assignments involving the use of various media
technologies (e.g., Web design tools, video, sound recording,
animation) may be incorporated within individual courses.
Entrance Requirements
To be eligible for admission, you
must have:
A bachelor’s degree or equivalent, both
fresh graduates and individuals with some working experience in
the media industry or other relevant professions are invited to
apply. Applicants without the specified qualifications may still

present equivalent qualifications and artistic credentials. All
applicants must have a demonstrated capacity to pursue the
programme.
English Proficiency Requirement
Applicants whose entrance qualification is obtained
from an institution where the medium of instruction is not English
should also fulfill the following minimum English proficiency
requirement:
- a TOEFL score of 550 (paper-based test) or 213
(computer-based test) or 79 (internet-based test); or
