About BAS

The programme emphasizes lateral thinking and understanding across professions to prepare graduates for an increasingly interdependent and integrated world. Students use technology as an artistic medium, generating this learning in a progressive and interdisciplinary context that builds bridges between art, science, technology and the humanities. The curriculum emphasizes creative and critical thinking in the domain of digital content, together with the successful expression of a socially-engaged personal vision through various digital media formats. Graduates receive professional training with state-of-the-art facilities to prepare them for future careers in the use of art, science and technology in the creative industries, innovative education, and cultural management.

This programme is especially designed for students who are not afraid to break down the barriers between art, science, technology and the humanities.

Degree Curriculum

School Requirement

All students will begin their studies with a set of common School Foundation Core Courses to acquire basic knowledge in the history and theory of media art, and to achieve basic competence in a range of creative media, including photography, sound, video, programming, electronics and installation.

Major Core

Students also complete Major core courses focusing on scientific research / visualization methods and art / science / culture integration.

All students will complete a Graduation Thesis, which can be a creative art project. An optional internship programme is also in place for students who want to gain professional experience before they graduate. Throughout the years of studies, students will have regular exposure to world-class artists and creative media professionals who come to SCM as guest or artist-in-residence.

Major Elective

Students are free to take from a comprehensive list of elective courses organized in groups, including: Art, Society & Culture; Arts and Science; Animation; Cinematic Arts; Computational Art, Visualization & Simulation; Sonic & Audio Arts; Photography & Digital Imaging; and Theory, History & Philosophy of Media Arts.

A strong Student Advising Scheme will be launched to provide essential guidance and mentoring to students as part of their study plan.

Free Elective / Minor

In addition to their Major, students can also take Free Electives (SCM or non-SCM courses) or a Minor according to their personal or career interests to fulfill the credit requirement for graduation.

Graduation Credit Requirements

(a) Normative 4-year Degree

  Minimum for graduation: 120 Credit Units (CUs) including the following:

   • Gateway Education : 30 CUs
  • School Requirement : 21 CUs
  • Major Core : 27 CUs
  • Major Elective : 24 CUs
  • Free Elective/Minor : 18 CUs
 
  Maximum permitted for students: 144 Credit Units

(b) For students with recognized Advanced Level Examinations or equivalent qualifications

  Minimum for graduation: 93 Credit Units (CUs) including the following:

   • Gateway Education : 21 CUs
  • School Requirement : 21 CUs
  • Major Core : 27 CUs
  • Major Elective : 24 CUs
 
  Maximum permitted for students: 114 Credit Units

(c) For Associated Degree / Higher Diploma Graduates admitted to the Senior Year

  Minimum for graduation: 75 Credit Units (CUs) including the following:

Career Prospects

Graduates will be prepared to be creative content providers for the games industry, animation, TV and digital media broadcasting, cinema and the contemporary arts. They may also choose to join the quickly advancing interactive media industry connected to advertising, exhibition and trade shows, and the emerging field of computer imaging for the health and science professions. Students will become key players in those areas that call for a close dialogue between art, science, and culture.

Admissions

School-Based Admissions for HKDSE and Direct Applicants with equivalent qualifications

JUPAS HKDSE students and Direct Applicants with equivalent qualifications will apply for admission to the School of Creative Media. Students will not select a Major until after one year of study. During their first year, students will study a broad range of Gateway Education (GE) courses as well as core-curricular courses designed by the School. At the end of the first year, the top 20% students (based on their CGPA at the end of semester B, and no failed courses) will have a free choice of Majors offered by the School. The other 80% students will be allocated to a Major of their choice, subject to availability of places.

Programme-Based Admissions for HKALE and Direct Applicants with equivalent qualifications

HKALE and Direct Applicants with equivalent qualifications will apply for admissions to the respective Degree offered by the School of Creative Media. During their first year, students will study a broad range of Gateway Education (GE) courses as well as core-curricular courses designed by the School. In the following years, they will proceed to study Major Core, Major Electives, Free Electives and optional Minor until the graduation requirement is fulfilled.

Portfolio Submission

DIRECT APPLICANTS of the BAS Degree are highly recommended to submit a portfolio and/or a self-introduction letter (by post or by hand) to the School of Creative Media. Please mark your name, HKID card/travel document number and the Degree applied for when you submit the portfolio. Portfolio materials may include documentation of still photography, paintings/drawings, sculpture, musical compositions/performances, films/videos, software, multi-media productions, academic or creative writing, or other forms of imaginative activity. Please refer to the School homepage at www.cityu.edu.hk/scm for details regarding the deadline for the submission of portfolios. Applicants may be invited to sit for a written examination and attend an interview intended to gauge their creative potential.

JUPAS HKALE students applying for JA1456, JA1468 and JA1471 are NOT required to submit portfolios. No interview is required.

JUPAS HKDSE students will apply for admission to the School of Creative Media (JS1041). Students will not select a Major until after one year of study. HKDSE applicants who select JS1041 as their Band A choice are highly recommended to submit a portfolio to the School of Creative Media via an on-line system. Details of the on-line portfolio submission arrangement will be announced towards the end of 2011 via the School homepage at www.cityu.edu.hk/scm. Applicants may be invited to sit for a written examination and attend an interview intended to gauge their creative potential.

Bonus Features

You will have the opportunity to study in the mainland and abroad as an exchange student to enrich your educational experience. You will be free to join media work competitions and festivals. School of Creative Media students regularly take advantage of overseas exchange study opportunities.

With the opening of the Creative Media Centre, the School will provide a regular schedule of in-house exhibitions and presentations by SCM faculty and students and internationally-recognized media artists and scholars.

    • For non-JUPAS (i.e. direct) applicants, please submit applications via CityU on-line admission system (see CityU home page at http://www.cityu.edu.hk). CityU application period for direct applicants normally starts from November to February of the following year.

    • For JUPAS applicants, follow JUPAS's application guidelines and schedules.

  3. The last cohort of HKALE candidates and the first cohort of HKDSE candidates will be entering universities in the 2012/13. How are they competing for university places with each other?

    • The two cohorts are not competing against each other for places. Intake quotas will be allocated separately for the two cohorts.

Part II: Q&A for HKDSE Students

  1. What are the general admission requirements?

    • Minimum Entrance Requirements for CityU & SCM

      • 4 core subjects [English (3), Chinese (3), Math (2), Liberal Studies (2)] + 1 electives (3)

      • Applied Learning subjects are not counted as electives.

  2. Would CityU/SCM consider OEA & non-academic performance?

    • Yes, the School may refer to the following information provided by JUPAS in offering admission place, in additional to HKDSE exam scores:

      • School Reference Report (SSR) including academic performance in secondary schools

      • Other Experiences and Achievements (OEA) form

      • Student Learning Profile (SLP), if provided by students

  3. Do I need to submit portfolio and/or self-introduction letter?

    • Yes. If you are a JUPAS HKDSE applicant listing the School as your Band A choice, you are required to submit portfolio via an on-line portfolio system between February and April 2012.

    • Details of the on-line portfolio submission will be announced towards the end of 2011.

  4. Do I need to attend an admission interview?

    • Yes, some HKDSE candidates will be invited for interview in late July 2012 after the announcement of the HKDSE results on 20 July 2012.

    • Individual interviews will be arranged to gauge candidates' creative potential. A short written/aptitude test may also be arranged.

    • Candidates who are absent from the interviews will normally NOT be considered for admissions.

  5. Do I need to indicate a potential Major upon application for admission?

    • No, Students will be required to select a Major until after their first year of study. The top 20% students (based on their CGPA at the end of Semester B, and no failed courses) will have a free choice of Majors offered by the School. The other 80% students will be allocated to a Major of their choice subject to availability of places for each Major.

Part III: Q&A for HKALE Students

  1. What are the entrance requirements?

    • Minimum Entrance Requirements for BACM/BScCM/BAS (JUPAS HKALE candidates)

      • 2 A-level Subjects + passes in AS Level Chin & Eng

      • 1 A-level Subject + 2 AS-level Subjects (other than English & Chinese) + passes in AS Level Chin & Eng

      • Additional requirement for BScCM: Grade "D" in Mathematics or Grade "E" in Additional Mathematics (HKCEE)

  2. What are average examination scores required for admission?

    • The average exam scores of the admitted applicants varies year from year, depending on the results of applicants' public exam in the same year of admission. Strong emphasis is placed on academic performance, language proficiency and creativity of applicants.

  3. Do I need to put SCM in Band A (JUPAS)?

    • To put SCM's programme in Band A can show that you are very much interested in studying the particular programme. But SCM may select some applicants who put SCM in Band B, depending on various circumstances.

    • In the event that applicants have the same credentials, applications with Band A choice will usually have a higher ranking.

  4. Do I need to attend an admission interview?

    • NO for JUPAS HKALE applicants seeking admissions to SCM Degrees in the 2012/13 Academic Year.

  5. Do I need to submit portfolio on application?

    • NO for JUPAS HKALE applicants seeking admissions to SCM Degrees in the 2012/13 Academic Year.

Part IV: Q&A for Direct Applicants (e.g. IVE/AD/IB/overseas high schools applicants)

  1. What is the percentage of JUPAS entrants to your undergraduate programmes, as compared with non-JUPAS entrants?

    • About 20% of our intake quota is for non-JUPAS applicants. The figure may vary slightly by year and by programme depending on the results of applicants' public exam in the same year of admission. Strong emphasis has been placed on the creativity of applicants.

  2. What are the entrance requirements for direct applicants?

    • Entrance Requirements for BACM/BScCM (Direct applications)

      • Articulation to Year 2: Graduated from a recognized Associate Degree / Higher Diploma award with a CGPA of >3.0 (or equivalent overall mark), or a credit award.

      • Entry to Year 1: Satisfactory completion of Year 1 Associate Degree / Higher Diploma with minimum overall GPA of 3.0 or equivalent (for admission to year 1)

      • Additional requirement for BScCM: "D" in Mathematics or "E" in Additional Mathematics (HKCEE)

  3. Do I need to attend admission interview?

    • YES for direct applicants seeking admissions to SCM in the 2012/13 Academic Year.

    • Shortlisted candidates will be interviewed individually in May 2012 to gauge their creative potential. A short written/aptitude test may also be arranged.

    • If an applicant applies for more than 1 SCM programmes, normally he/she will be invited to attend one interview only, if required.

    • For direct applicants who are studying overseas, telephone interviews may be arranged.

  4. Am I required to submit portfolio?

    • Direct applicants are highly recommended to submit a portfolio and/or a self-introduction letter to the School of Creative Media (by hand or by post).
