RESEARCH     STRENGTHS
The past and future success of the Centre is based on the active engagement in research by the members of the Centre and the Department of Mathematics.

The Mathematics Department has twenty faculty members and is currently working on 34 Competitive Earmarked Research Grants (CERG) Projects funded by the Research Grants Council (RGC), and 22 City University Strategic Research Grant projects. In the recent University Grants Committee (UGC) Research Assessment Exercise, it registered the highest percentage of active researchers among the six post-secondary mathematics departments in Hong Kong. Over half the academic staff members in the Mathematics Department are actively engaged in research in Computational Mathematics. These staff members are either core members of, or closely connected to, the Centre.

In the RGC CERG competition carried out in 1999, the Mathematics Department obtained ten grants with a total funding of HK$3.93 million in mathematics disciplines. This is the fourth consecutive year in which the Department has won the largest number of grants in mathematics amongst all local tertiary institutions.
