1998 Summer Workshop Series
We hosted 4 Summer Workshops in 1998:

1. "Economy of China after East Asia Miracle and Crisis: A Corporate Governance Perspective"
was coordinated by Dr. Shuhe Li. Professors from Stanford University, the University of Minnesota, Beijing University, the University of Hong Kong, and Hong Kong University of Science and Technology presented their research papers during the workshop. The topics covered included: government as a transitional institution in corporate governance, corporatization of Chinese state enterprises.

2. "Financial Market Studies"
was coordinated by Dr. Jun Cai. Two professors from Cornell University and New York University gave four lectures on foreign exchange options, depository receipts, country funds and the peso crash.


3. "International Trade, Factor Mobility, and Asia",
was co-organized by Prof. Kar-yiu Wong of the University of Washington and Prof. Richard Ho, the Acting Director of APFM. Thirty-six researchers from the U.S.A., Germany, Singapore, Taiwan and Hong Kong participated in the conference which offered opportunities for people to present their latest work on international trade and factor mobility and share their views on the growth of some Asian countries and then current Asian crisis. Sixteen papers were presented in the conference. [details

4. "The Asian Crisis: The Economics Front" was co-organized by Prof. Chong K. Yip of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Prof. Kar-yiu Wong of the University of Washington and Prof. Richard Ho, the Acting Director of APFM. Around 60 participants went to the University of Washington to take part in the conference coming from Hong Kong, Korea, Taiwan, Malaysia, Portugal, Germany and the U.S.A. The topics covered included currency pegging and monetary policy, the crises in Indonesia and Taiwan, exchange rates, lending, and financial markets and lending indicators. [details]

 

Collaboration 

1. Hosted the conference of International Trade, Factor Mobility, and Asia together with the University of Washington, July 1998, which was held at the City University of Hong Kong. Thirty-six researchers from the U.S.A., Germany, Singapore, Taiwan and Hong Kong participated in the conference. Up-to-date works were presented on international trade and factor mobility and participants shared their views on the growth of some Asian countries and then current Asian Crisis. 3. Hosted an International Workshop on "International Trade, Industrial Organization, and Asia", together with the University of Washington, August 1999, at the City University of Hong Kong. Thirty-three researchers from the USA, Japan, Germany, Hong Kong, the UK, Indonesia, Taiwan, and Canada participated in the conference. Participators presented their latest work on international trade and industrial organization in Asia.

4. Co-hosted an International Conference: The Asian Crisis II, 4-5 January 2000, with the University of Washington held in Seattle.

5. The APFM is delighted to confirm it will jointly host conferences on "Greater China and the World Economy", and "International Economies and Asia" with the University of Washington. The conference will be held at the City University of Hong Kong in July 2001.
