'Smarter life aided by robots' Competition (2017)

Introduction

'Smarter life aided by robots' is an institution-wide competition to encourage and award students to demonstrate their innovative ideas and skills in robotic design and application. Students are invited to design and programme robots, through operating Lego robots, with innovative ideas and application for providing a smarter life for the elderly, children, or people in need.

Eligibility

Current UGC funded CityU undergraduate or taught postgraduate students.

Entry Requirements

The entry

  • can be from a team of 3 to 4 CityU students. Teams must compose of students from at least 2 Colleges/Schools to promote inter-disciplinary collaboration.
  • must be designed and programmed by student participants Lego robots provided by the Organising Committee.

Submission Guides

  • Please complete the Online Application Form by 5:00pm on 11 October 2016.
    You will need to:
    • introduce your idea or work in English - its look, function, usage, uniqueness, feasibility and possible impact, etc.;
    • illustrate the idea/work using images and/or a video clip;
      • For photos, save them in jpeg format, with size not exceeding 1280x1024 pixels or 5MB.
      • For the video clip, save it on YouTube (privacy setting: private) and send in only the video link.
    • include the personal information of each team member - last and first names, Department & College/School, CityU student ID number, CityU email address and mobile phone number.
  • Your idea or work is required to be built and presented as a prototype or final product at the Competition scheduled for 15 February 2017.

Selection Criteria

A panel of judges will assess the proposals on their social impact and business viability along with the following selection criteria:

  • Originality
  • Innovativeness
  • Implementation feasibility & readiness

Awards and Prizes

The winner(s) may be awarded with

  • professional support for further advancement of the innovation,
  • HK$3,000 book store coupon.
Winning and shortlisted designs may be displayed at the 2017 CityU Discovery Festival.

Notification and Announcement of Winner(s)

The announcement will be officially made at the award presentation ceremony of the 2017 CityU Discovery Festival.

Rules and Regulations

  • In submitting an entry the whole team agree to abide by the CityU Intellectual Property Policy guidelines http://wikisites.cityu.edu.hk/sites/upolicies/ippolicy/Wiki%20Pages/Home.aspx
  • Only one controller is allowed for each team, but the number of motors and sensors to be used is not restricted.
  • All submissions must be original and have never been released publicly. An entry will be disqualified and the submitting team will be held responsible for any wilful act of infringement of intellectual property rights.
  • All decisions made by the panel of judges are final.
  • Once the entries are submitted, all members of the submitting team are assumed to have read and understood the above rules and regulations, and agree to abide by them.
