Message from the Head

Professor Alfred Tat-Kei HO

Education, research and community engagement in the Department examine the whole policy process and prepare the next generation of public service leaders who can work collaboratively and effectively across sectors, countries, and cultures for the enhancement of global and local public goods. Graduating students understand political decisions and institutions, processes of public policy making, and the management of organizations that deliver public services and values.

Our research, teaching, and community services cover a wide range of organisational contexts: public, private, non-governmental and voluntary sectors. Students experience a vibrant academic environment which challenges them to think critically and creatively about local, regional and global policy challenges, use robust analytical skills to dissect societal problems and recommend improvements, and to become responsible and ethical future leaders in society. The personal development of students is central to our mission. We are committed to provide our students rigorous coursework, international experience, internships, and experiential learning so that they will be ready to lead in our ever-changing world.

The Department is multidisciplinary and multinational that brings an energetic international and local orientation to the classroom. Faculty members also collaborate with other departments and schools within and outside the university. We conduct cutting-edge research on public and nonprofit management, urban policies, politics and comparative governance, and the Department is recognized as a leader in the region. For example, the 2020 Academic Ranking of World Universities places our public administration/management research 1st in Hong Kong, 1st in Asia, and 22nd in the world, and political science 1st in Hong Kong, 2nd in Asia, and in the top 200 in the world. I invite you to learn more about us, and look forward to meeting you!
