Seminar: Optical quantum state manipulation and light storage in cold atomic ensemble

ABSTRACT

By fusing temporal waveform generation in an atomic ensemble and spatial single-photon shaping, we hereby demonstrate for the first time complete spatiotemporal control of a propagation invariant (2+1)D Airy single-photon optical bullet, where the temporal and spatial distribution of a single photon are described by Airy functions. Our methodology allows one to synthesize in a robust and versatile manner arbitrary quantum nonspreading spatiotemporal light bullets and in this respect could have ramifications in a broad range of applications such as quantum imaging, long-distance quantum communications, and multidimensional information encoding. In addition, for addressing the inevitable light loss issue in long-distance transmission, quantum repeaters based on optical storage schemes play an important role in long-distance quantum networks. We demonstrated that a laser beam acting on an atomic ensemble can generate a fictitious magnetic field through the ac Stark effect. This fictitious magnetic field can balance the residual magnetic field in the environment, eliminating the non-uniform broadening of atomic energy levels caused by the magnetic field. This method can be used to further enhance the quantum storage lifetime based on cold atomic ensembles. The simple and versatile technique we demonstrated can be applied to optical storage in other types of atomic physical media, including solid-state storage and hot atomic systems.
