PhD Opportunity: Racehorse Epidemiology

We are seeking expressions of interest from potential PhD students with an interest in racehorse performance, health and welfare. Come and join a committed, energetic and growing group of racehorse researchers based at the new College of Veterinary Medicine and Life Sciences.

Host institution / base: College of Veterinary Medicine & Life Sciences, City University of Hong Kong
in collaboration with the Hong Kong Jockey Club.
(This project could be run in collaboration with the College of Veterinary Medicine, Cornell University)
Species: Horses
Student characteristics:
  • Final year or graduate in animal science or veterinary medicine
    OR students with statistical or other animal/mathematics based majors
  • A masters in veterinary epidemiology or similar field is desirable, but not required
  • University or veterinary school rank will be taken into account
  • Cumulative GPA of 3.5 or more on a scale of 4, or equivalent
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Lateral thinker
  • Not at risk of ban from entering the United States or Hong Kong
  • Experience in handling horses, an interest in racehorses, and an understanding of the racing industry is desirable, but not essential
  • Experience with linear or logistic regression analysis or time series analysis is desirable, but not essential
Financial support: Scholarship (2017 rates):
  • Subsistence HK$16,200 per month for four years;
    (A three year project may be offered to candidates with post-graduate qualifications)
