Programme Aims

The programme aims to
  1. develop their intellectual capacity in researching systematically and analysing critically theories and concepts about policy processes and governance;
  2. to furnish students with an advanced level of understanding and theoretical perspectives in evaluating the dynamics of the modernization process;
  3. equip graduates with thorough understanding of the development and implication of  social, political, economic and legal institutions within the context of economic transition in China.

Programme Intended Learning Outcomes (PILOs)

Upon successful completion of this Programme, students should be able to:
  1. Develop a strong command of knowledge of major social science concepts and theories on governance, economic development and institutional development;
  2. Conduct independent research in issues related to development of China in an interdisciplinary and analytical manner;
  3. Demonstrate a theoretical understanding of the various dimensions of marketization and modernization processes;
  4. Identify and explain the core features and challenges to governance, socioeconomic development and sustainability of China’s modernization;
  5. Develop social empathy, moral sensibility, critical capacity, multiple perspectives, sustained interest and analytical skills in understanding the changes in contemporary China and development process in other settings.

Students must apply with a formal 1,500-word Dissertation Proposal. Full-time student must make the application by the term of their first semester and part-time students must apply in the beginning of their 3rd term. All applications are subject to the approval of the Dissertation Committee.
