Professor Way Kuo is President of City University
of Hong Kong, commencing 14 May 2008.
Before joining CityU, Professor Kuo was University
Distinguished Professor and Dean of Engineering at the University
of Tennessee (UT). He has been named a Distinguished Visiting
Scientist at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. During his tenure
at UT from 2003 to 2008, he oversaw a marked increase in funds
raised through the development of industrial and alumni contacts.
Professor Kuo dedicated his service to Texas
A&M University from 1993 to 2003, where he held the Wisenbaker
Chair of Engineering in Innovation and was the Executive Associate
Dean of Engineering for three years. From 1993-2000, he was
head of the Department of Industrial Engineering, managing
both the industrial and biomedical engineering programmes.
The NRC - Research Doctoral Programmes and US News & World
Report rated the department under his leadership among the
best in the US.
Professor Kuo received his PhD degree in
engineering in 1980 from Kansas State University and BS degree
in nuclear engineering in 1972 from National Tsing-Hua University
in Taiwan. He worked for Bell Laboratories during 1981-1984
before joining the academic field. He was appointed a Fulbright
Scholar in 1991.
He is elected a Foreign Member of the Chinese
Academy of Engineering. He is also an elected member of the
US National Academy of Engineering, Academia Sinica in Taiwan
and International Academy for Quality. He is Fellow of the
American Society for Quality (ASQ), Institute of Electrical
and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), Institute for Operations
Research and the Management Science (INFORMS), American Statistical
Association (ASA), and Institute of Industrial Engineers (IIE).
Professor Kuo is renowned for his work in
designing and modelling reliability for electronics systems
and products and is a recipient of the IEEE Reliability Society
Lifetime Achievement Award. He holds honorary professorship
titles at Tsinghua University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University,
Xian Jiaotong University, Central South University, Beijing
University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, National Tsing-Hua
University, National Taiwan University and National Chiao-Tung
University.
His other awards and honours include David
F Baker Distinguished Research Award, Albert G Holzman Distinguished
Educator Award, Award for Technical Innovation in Industrial
Engineering, Institute of Industrial Engineers (IIE); Hall
of Fame, Kansas State University College of Engineering; the
Pan Wen-Yuan Foundation Award for Outstanding Research; Distinguished
Alumni Award, National Tsing-Hua University; IEEE Millennium
Medal; TSMC Chair; Austin Bonis Award for Outstanding Achievement
in the Advancement of Reliability Research, ASQ; and others.
With his remarkable academic achievements, he has been appointed
an external examiner and advisor for internationally renowned
institutions, hi-tech companies and research organisations.
A co-author of six textbooks, he is also
well respected for promoting the higher education with an
emphasis on its relevance to societal needs and problem-driven
research. He serves as Editor of IEEE Transactions on Reliability.
